Ralph Gracie Berkeley Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu operates under the leadership of 5th degree black belt Eduardo Fraga. The leadership team includes Ralph Gracie and Eduardo Fraga, who leads the Berkeley academy. Ralph Gracie opened his first Bay Area academy in 1994, and the Ralph Gracie Berkeley Academy opened its doors in 2005. The program’s stated goal is to help every student perform at their best and reach their goals, whether related to competition, fitness, or self defense. Eduardo Fraga’s individual Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu accomplishments include being a 10-time medalist at the IBJJF Pan Americans at black belt and a 7-time São Paulo State Champion. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at this academy is described as a modern martial art that rose to prominence in the early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), is considered one of the most effective forms of self-defense and an essential part of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and is often referred to as human chess. The training focuses on using technique and leverage over strength, with the goal of forcing an opponent into submission with joint locks and chokes, and is described as an excellent way to improve physical fitness, balance, coordination, confidence, focus, and to reduce stress.
