The Lawrence Hall of Science states that it fosters scientific exploration with a focus on equitable learning experiences and describes learning as “made fun, when ‘ha ha’ moments become ‘aha!’ moments.” The organization offers financial aid to families who otherwise lack the resources to participate. It also runs a Teen Internship Program for high school students who have a passion for science and enjoy working with youth, Teen Research Programs to explore a career in science and conduct research at UC Berkeley, and a Climate Ambassadors program for those interested in environmental science and climate change.
The Lawrence Hall of Science provides organizational memberships that include access to monthly workshops and quarterly networking events for professional learning, along with virtual professional learning services for STEM educators, leaders, and organizations. Community involvement includes celebrating the opening of a new lobby and honoring Community Science Heroes and Ohlone Science Diplomats, as well as hosting an annual Earth Day Celebration and Earth Month events with UC Berkeley organizations.
One virtual workshop attendee reported feeling extremely encouraged about using questioning strategies from the program and described gaining solid ideas about how and why to implement broad questions and connect exploration to curriculum goals. Another virtual workshop attendee noted appreciating the pacing of an event and described participating as a learner as rewarding and fun. A third virtual workshop attendee attributed positive feedback about outdoor educators and high school leaders to professional development received from the organization’s leadership institute and professional learning sessions.
