The Bay Area Writing Project Youth Writing Programs are part of the Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP), which is based at the University of California, Berkeley and housed in the Graduate School of Education. Instructors are highly experienced classroom teachers who serve as BAWP Teacher-Consultants. High School Writing Courses are unique writing classes held at UC Berkeley, and the camps are for students who like to write and are not remedial writing camps. Young Writers Camps offer a relaxed atmosphere and provide in-depth writing instruction, extended periods of writing time, flexibility in writing assignments, and daily time to share writing with peers, and students can take writing risks that they might not be able to in a traditional classroom setting.

The Bay Area Writing Project has been serving educators since 1973, and over the past 35 years its youth programs have grown. During its 40+ years, BAWP has expanded to offer workshops for young writers in grades 3–12, for pre-service teachers, for teachers as writers, and for after school program leaders. BAWP is a collaborative program between the University of California, Berkeley and Bay Area schools and is the flagship Writing Project site that influenced the establishment of the California and National Writing Project networks. BAWP and the California Writing Project Network meet to align commitments to social justice.

The organization’s founder, Jim Gray, started the Writing Project and put into action the idea that successful classroom teachers make the best teachers of other teachers. BAWP partners with CFM Educational Services to provide the Writing Foundation for College & Career program for visiting international students, with International Schools Services and ULink (ISS-ULink) to hold Youth Writing Camps in Guangdong, China, and with Third Classroom to provide the 12-hour, six-session online course. The Bay Area Writing Project describes its mission as being an organization of, by, and for teachers of writing at all grade levels and in all disciplines, dedicated to improving the teaching and uses of writing through a variety of programs on the university campus and in Bay Area schools.
