UC Berkeley Recreation & Wellbeing has been running summer camps for more than 60 years. The program includes martial arts instruction through the UC Martial Arts Program (UCMAP), which began in 1969 as the first major university-based martial arts program in the nation. Instruction in UCMAP clubs is carried out by high-ranking instructors in their particular martial arts, under leadership that includes Dr. Russell Ahn, Director of the UC Martial Arts Program, and Dr. Ken Min, founder of the program. The Martial Arts Program states that its purpose is to preserve the philosophy, techniques, and traditions of martial arts and to develop a scientific understanding of the physical and spiritual implications of human performance.

The UC Martial Arts Program is described as dedicated to providing martial arts instruction to the campus and surrounding communities and is active in organizing and hosting instructional seminars, symposiums, and martial arts camps, as well as participating in collegiate, national, and world competitions. The future of UCMAP was supported in 1995 by a one-million-dollar endowment from the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Korea and the World Taekwondo Federation, formally named the Ken Min Endowed Directorship for Taekwondo and the Martial Arts. The program notes partnerships with Yongin University and Korean National Sport University, the establishment of the International Martial Arts Research Institute (IMARI), and publication of an academic journal of martial arts monograph series by IMARI. UC Berkeley Youth Recreation Summer Camps reports a 4-star rating on Yelp, and the Universal Locker Room used by participants is described as an award-winning facility.
