Youth Tennis Advantage’s mission is to help close opportunity and achievement gaps for under-resourced youth in the San Francisco Bay Area through comprehensive tennis, academic, and enrichment programs, promoting the physical, educational, and life skills necessary to prepare and empower them to reach for their full potential. Youth Tennis Advantage (YTA) was formed in 1999 from a merger of Youth Tennis Foundation, established in 1968, and NJTL of San Francisco, established in 1974, and has shown an unconditional commitment to racial equality and social justice since its inception over 50 years ago. YTA runs year-round programs in the Bay Area, serving more than 300 kids each year through free after-school and summer programs exclusively for kids ages 8–18 in underserved communities, across four Bay Area locations, and partners with other organizations to support underserved youth. The programs focus on three core areas of instruction: tennis, academics, and life skills, and use a Life Skills Curriculum that merges tennis with education on nutrition, study routines, positive thinking, peer pressure, and conflict resolution. YTA provides free programs for kids ages 8–18, serves a diverse population of students, and the majority of participants are Black, and YTA stands in unequivocal solidarity with Americans of color, especially with the Black community. YTA was named as a partner for the Laver Cup Legacy Project and is an NJTL 4-Star Chapter. Programs can be joined any time throughout the year, depending on capacity, and are designed for kids of all tennis levels. The Big Hitters PRO/AM event is a YTA tradition since the 1980s and includes doubles tennis. The Executive Director is Mike Skinner. Arthur Ashe stated, “Through tennis lives are being changed and spirits reclaimed.”
