About
Beach Cities Volleyball Youth Programs include indoor volleyball with a focus on passing, setting, hitting, serving, and digging. Participants take part in games and scrimmages, along with moderate physical conditioning and body core strengthening.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Week-long Youth Indoor Volleyball Summer Camp sessions from 6/29–8/14, plus a shorter Future Stars Session 7 from 6/1–6/20 held one day per week at the Palos Verdes location and 1–2 days per week at the Torrance location.
Beach Cities Volleyball states that its mission is to “Teach life skills and volleyball skills from 8 to 18,” with priorities to have fun, teach volleyball skills, and act as a positive role model. The program groups players by skill level as beginner, intermediate, or advanced and holds periodic competitions made up of teams from within the group. Development and habitual use of effective volleyball skills in competitive situations is described as central for advanced programming, and Beach Cities Volleyball builds beginning, intermediate, and advanced teams at every age level. The organization states that it does not solely focus on its top or strongest teams, but works to focus on every player and highlight every team in the club.
Beach Cities Volleyball reports that its training and programming help athletes grow mentally, physically, and emotionally, and that it helps develop an athlete’s character both on and off the court. The club trains players on its Smack teams to be able to compete at the collegiate level and provides help with the recruiting process, including video recording, team and individual analysis through statistics in practice and games, contacting college coaches, and helping players sign up for showcases and travel opportunities.
The staff includes experienced and passionate coaches, and head coaches have years of experience and resumes that include former professional players, college players, current college coaches, high school coaches, CIF Champion Coaches, and CIF Coach of the Year Award winners. Beach Cities Volleyball states that coaching is a passion, not just a job, and that it has some of the best coaches in the South Bay. The leadership team includes Chip Schulte, Founder and President of Beach Cities Volleyball since 2000.
Beach Cities Volleyball has been serving the South Bay since 2000. Tony Mayrie, Don Shaw, and Chip Schulte started the program at tryouts in October 1999, with programming for four teams the first year and 10 teams the second year. The organization notes that its athletes and coaching staff cross community, income level, and ethnic lines.
Beach Cities Volleyball has been recognized as 2025 Best Kids Camp. It was voted Best of the Beach Youth Sports Organization in 2025, 2024, 2023, and 2022, and Best of the Westside Youth Sports Organization in 2024, 2023, 2021, 2019, and 2018.
