Delta Heat Basketball was founded in 2021 by coach Drew Torres as an AAU basketball program. Drew began coaching in the 2002–2003 season as an assistant varsity coach at Pleasant Valley High School in Chico while finishing his master’s degree at Chico State University. He then served as head frosh coach at Antioch High School in the 2003–2004 season and became varsity coach there at age 25, setting a school record for wins in a season in 2005–2006, which was broken again in 2006–2007. After moving to Freedom High School following the 2006–2007 season, his teams qualified for the Division One playoffs for the first time in school history in his first season and consistently reached the NCS Division 1 playoffs, including five straight NorCal playoff appearances from 2011–2015. Freedom was North Coast Section runner-up in 2014 and finished second in NorCal that same season, losing in overtime in the state semifinal, and won three BVAL championships in a row from 2014–2016; the 2014 wins record he set there still stands. Drew resigned from Freedom in 2019 to coach his son, Chase, and later started Delta Heat as a program for many kids in the community.

The leadership group includes founder and coach Drew Torres, Coach Dante, Coach O’Donnell (“OD”), Coach Ryan, and Coach Tre’von. Coach Dante joined Delta Heat in 2021 and previously served as an assistant varsity basketball coach at Monte Vista High School from 2000–2002. The coaching staff is described as local educators and coaches who specialize in the development of the whole child.

Delta Heat states that its mission is to provide an exceptional basketball experience with high-quality instruction and a strong emphasis on skill development and fundamental training to prepare athletes for the next level. The program describes itself as the East Bay’s Premier Basketball Development Program and the premier AAU basketball organization in the East Bay, with a strong emphasis on both skill and character development. It focuses on developing high-character individuals and highlights discipline, accountability, confidence, leadership, teamwork, hard work, and respect as core themes. The coaches are committed to mentoring players and helping them build habits and a mindset that carry over to school, sports, and everyday life, and the program aims to challenge athletes, support their growth, and prepare them to compete with confidence while representing themselves, their families, and the program “the right way.” Delta Heat states that it believes team sports teach life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and perseverance, and Drew’s stated aim is to “teach and coach kids in our community to become the best version of themselves so they can help make the world a better place.”

Delta Heat Basketball describes its environment as fun and competitive and offers a range of outreach programs including youth clinics and skills camps, along with competitive opportunities in local tournaments and a competitive travel tournament environment. The program prepares athletes for their middle school and high school tryouts and participates in local events as part of the team sports community. It also notes that Drew is an active community member serving on many district councils, panels, and committees.

The program uses state-of-the-art indoor top-notch local facilities, including local high schools, middle schools, and recreational courts. It is dedicated to providing equipment and apparel that support athletes, including custom team uniforms that are both stylish and functional, designed with the latest fabrics and technologies.

Parent testimonials describe Coach Drew as having strong basketball knowledge, extensive sports experience, and people skills, and say that children enjoy working with him. Parents report that their children have attended multiple Delta Heat camps, gained skills, and developed a great love for the game, with one family noting that their daughter’s teams finished as the #1 seed twice and won a championship under his coaching. Another parent states that her son never misses a Delta Heat camp and that the skilled training drills have really helped him in basketball. A family with two boys who attended Delta Heat Youth Basketball Camp describes Drew as a wonderful coach who genuinely cares for the kids and their development, makes sure everyone participates, and runs a favorite skills game called “Base-ketball,” and they share their boys’ message: “Thank you for helping us with basketball! We really enjoy it and want to do it again!”
