Lamont Smith Basketball Academy is led by Coach Smith, former Division I head coach Lamont Smith, who has coached for over 20 years at the Division I level and applies collegiate-level training methods to elite club teams and player development. The mission of the program is to teach the fundamentals of the game in a repetitious way so each player is sound in all areas, using attention to detail, structure, and small group sizes to support growth and development, while aiming to grow the game, impact, and serve. The program states that it is committed to teaching the next generation skills and principles that apply on and off the court, and it sets expectations that every player will grow and develop in accountability, discipline, responsibility, teamwork, communication, professionalism, and work ethic. LSBA has also taken part in community experiences such as being hosted by UC Irvine at its 2021 home opener versus Boise State, where participants experienced a collegiate atmosphere.
Parents and organizations have shared testimonials describing Coach Smith as one of the best teachers of the game they have been around, noting his knowledge, passion to serve, and attention to detail in building skills. One parent reports that her son has trained with Coach Smith for seven months, describes his commitment to the kids and extensive knowledge of the game, and says her son leaves sessions happy and talking about new techniques he learns. Another parent states that all the coaches their children have worked with have been excellent and that Coach Smith takes it to a higher level, comparing the instruction their 11- and 12-year-olds receive to high-level college coaching.
