About
Community Youth Center (CYC) offers academic support through its Academic Excellence program, which includes homework help and tutoring. The program also offers a wide range of sports and fitness activities, including boxing, cheerleading, dance, flag football, gymnastics, judo, soccer, strength and conditioning, taekwondo, wrestling, and swim.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 12pm–7pm, with year-round programs and flexible class schedules across afternoons and evenings
• Price: A $40 initiation fee covers the first month of membership; monthly dues are $37 per month for the first member in a household and $18 for each additional child.
Membership includes access to every CYC program, and members may enroll in any age-appropriate class across sports and academics with year-round scheduling. Programs are available for youth ages 3–18, with separate age groups for each sport and academic level, and CYC serves more than 2,000 active members each year. CYC offers varied levels of instruction from beginner to elite and was founded to address the lack of affordable after-school programs and the growing challenges of at-risk youth. Scholarships and financial aid are offered to families in need, and no child is turned away due to finances. CYC states that it provides high quality academic and athletic programs with no financial barriers for all young people and emphasizes values such as discipline, desire, compassion, teamwork, respect, sportsmanship, and commitment.
Community Youth Center (CYC) has operated since 1995 and has shaped Olympians, champions, and other success stories. In 1995, a $1 million gift from The Hofmann Family Foundation transformed a small boxing club on Galaxy Court into what became one of the Bay Area’s youth development centers. Programs at CYC have produced Olympians, national champions, and academic achievers, and CYC serves youth ages 3–18 from families across Contra Costa County, including Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, Martinez, Antioch, Brentwood, and surrounding communities. CYC is supported by donors and volunteers and is guided by community support, volunteers, and local partnerships.
The mission of CYC is to empower local youth by cultivating transferable life skills through athletic and academic performance, with a focus on a safe, structured environment where young people can develop dedication, discipline, desire, and confidence. CYC describes itself as an academic and athletic performance developmental institution that provides local youth ages 3–18 with varied levels of instruction, from beginner to elite, regardless of financial barriers. It also describes itself as a place where students are part of a diverse culture, where staff seek to meet students where they are in their development, and where students are allowed to grow at their own pace in a safe environment. Academic centers at CYC provide subject-specific tutors, study strategies, and time management skills.
The staff at CYC includes decorated athletes, Olympic alumni, and dedicated educators. The leadership and coaching team includes Matt Harrison (executive director), Alexis Diaz (Academic Excellence), Mary Anne Schneider (Little “AE” Program Director), Gary Sullenger (Head Boxing Coach), Juan Arias (Assistant Boxing Coach), Windy Rolandelli (Head Cheer Coach), Cassie Bunch (Assistant Cheer Coach), Arti Awasti (Customer Service Director), Joshua De Alba (Dance Coach), Sophia Seeno (Director of Events), Blake Wayne (Marketing Director, Head Football Coach, Program Director), Nicki Gwizdak (Head Gymnastics Coach), Dennis Gutridge (Head Judo Coach), Cristian Contreras (Head Soccer Coach), Brad Buccholz (Strength and Conditioning Head Coach, Program Director), Ed Austin (Head Taekwondo Coach), Steve Gee (Head Wrestling Coach), Robby Smith (Assistant Head Wrestling Coach, School Liaison), Mawuko Tugbenyoh (Program Director), Ray Newman (Head of Maintenance), Alondra Jacobo (Customer Service Supervisor), and Colby Thompson (Head Swim Coach).
CYC offers flexible enrollment, and memberships can be updated or canceled anytime with 30 days’ notice using an online cancellation form. CYC states that it is rooted in Concord and serves youth across the Bay Area, and that it is supported by donors and volunteers. Testimonials from alumni include comments from Peyton Omania, a 2017 CYC alumnus, who says CYC taught accountability, work ethic, and discipline, and from Kevin Montano, a 2015 CYC alumnus, who describes CYC as a second home and credits the boxing coaching staff with pushing him beyond his limits and supporting his career.
