Community Youth Center (CYC) is an academic and athletic performance developmental institution serving more than 2,000 active members each year and helping youth ages 3–18 across the Bay Area through affordable athletic and academic programs. CYC provides varied levels of instruction, from beginner to elite, and programs have produced Olympians, national champions, and academic achievers. Values at CYC include discipline, desire, compassion, teamwork, respect, sportsmanship, and commitment, and scholarships are available with financial aid offered to families in need, with no child turned away due to finances. Memberships can be updated or canceled anytime with 30 days’ notice using an online cancellation form, and CYC is described as a unique place where students are part of a diverse culture, where staff seek to meet students where they are in their development, and where students are allowed to grow at their pace in a safe environment.
Community Youth Center (CYC) has shaped Olympians, champions, and many success stories since 1995, after a $1 million gift from The Hofmann Family Foundation transformed a small boxing club on Galaxy Court into a leading youth development center. The staff includes decorated athletes, Olympic alumni, and dedicated educators. The leadership team includes Matt Harrison (executive director); Alexis Diaz (Academic Excellence); Mary Anne Schneider (Little “AE” Program Director); Gary Sullenger (Head Boxing Coach); Juan Arias (Assistant Boxing Coach); Windy Rolandelli (Head Cheer Coach); Cassie Bunch (Assistant Cheer Coach); Arti Awasti (Customer Service Director); Joshua De Alba (Dance Coach); Sophia Seeno (Director of Events); Blake Wayne (Marketing Director/Head Football Coach/Program Director); Nicki Gwizdak (Head Gymnastics Coach); Dennis Gutridge (Head Judo Coach); Cristian Contreras (Head Soccer Coach); Brad Buccholz (Strength and Conditioning Head Coach/Program Director); Ed Austin (Head Taekwondo Coach); Steve Gee (Head Wrestling Coach); Robby Smith (Assistant Head Wrestling Coach/School Liaison); Mawuko Tugbenyoh (Program Director); Ray Newman (Head of Maintenance); Alondra Jacobo (Customer Service Supervisor); and Colby Thompson (Head Swim Coach). The mission at CYC is to empower local youth by cultivating transferable life skills through athletic and academic performance in a safe, structured environment, with a focus on dedication, discipline, desire, and confidence to pursue excellence in every part of life.
CYC is rooted in Concord and serves youth across the Bay Area, guided by community support, volunteers, and local partnerships, with options for donating, volunteering, or joining the coaching and staff team. One testimonial from Peyton Omania, a 2017 CYC alumni, states that CYC was more than a place to train and that it instilled traits such as accountability, strong work ethic, and discipline. Another testimonial from Kevin Montano, a 2015 CYC alumni, describes CYC as a second home and a family, and credits the boxing coaching staff’s support since age 8 as important in his career.
