UCP of the North Bay was founded in 1981 after the merger of UCP of Marin, founded in 1954, and UCP of Sonoma, founded in 1969. The organization’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities, their families, and their communities. Recreation programs teach leisure and social skills that support independent participation in recreation activities with family members and friends. UCP of the North Bay provides services for children and adults with disabilities and their families living in Sonoma, Napa, and Solano Counties.

Camp Kaos offers inclusive outdoor experiences tailored to children and young adults with diverse abilities and serves children ages 6–22 with physical and developmental disabilities. Camp activities at Camp Kaos are adapted for all campers to fully participate. UCPNB’s 2024 Summer Bike/Swim Camp provides specialized instruction and adaptive techniques to empower children with disabilities in learning how to swim and ride bikes. Bike/Swim Camp teaches campers with developmental and/or physical disabilities ages 8–22 how to ride a conventional two-wheeled bicycle and uses specially designed equipment and teaching methods to promote skill development, self-confidence, and self-esteem. The swim portion of Bike/Swim Camp provides a “learn through play” recreation activity at the completion of bicycle riding.

Adventure Trips provide safe risk-taking, self-esteem building experiences for adults with developmental disabilities, and UCPNB’s Camp Arroyo provides a serene and accessible environment for individuals with disabilities to enjoy outdoor activities and social experiences. UCPNB’s Adult Day Recreation programs offer an environment where individuals with disabilities can socialize, learn, and enjoy a range of activities tailored to their interests and needs. United Cerebral Palsy of the North Bay partners with Sonoma County Regional Parks, Spectrum Surf, and Environmental Training Companions to provide educational camps. Supervision and support at Camp Kaos is provided by Camp Counselors and volunteers from Sonoma State University and local high schools, and supervision and support for Adventure Trips is provided by UCP of the North Bay staff members and skilled volunteers from Environmental Traveling Companions. The leadership team includes Danielle Schulze, Recreation Coordinator, and Jen Whalen, Director of Community Programs. One parent stated, “I am incredibly thankful for UCP of the North Bay’s Bike and Swim Camp and the profound impact it has had on my son Nico.” — Jessica Somoff.
