The Sonoma County Family YMCA operates as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit social services organization with a mission that focuses on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility, and describes itself as an inclusive, charitable organization that enriches community in these areas. The Y reports more than 100 years of camping experience in its camp system and states that its camps are a safe and nurturing place where children build self-esteem, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility for themselves and the world around them. The Sonoma County Family YMCA was founded in Sonoma County in 1954, with a program and physical education facility built near downtown Santa Rosa in 1972, an Activity Center added in 1993, a teaching pool added in 1995, and a remodeled lobby and Child Watch area plus a 4,700 square foot second-story fitness center added between 2003 and 2005. The organization states that it provides camp opportunities to more than 3,000 youth each summer, regardless of ability to pay, and that financial assistance is available for income-eligible families who want to participate in camping programs.

For camps located at Rohnert Park schools including Hahn, Monte Vista, La Fiesta, Thomas Page, and Lawrence Jones Middle School, families must first register through Activity Hero via the school district. The Y also offers a virtual platform called Y360 as a free benefit for all Y membership categories. One parent testimonial reports that a child who was very anxious about attending camp said they “love it” after the first day and now responds with excitement on camp days.
