About
Quest Therapeutic Camps offers a combined recreational and therapeutic program that uses play as the focus of intervention by experienced, well trained counselors. The program includes individualized treatment plans, group therapy, and a cognitive behavioral therapy program, with campers assigned to groups based on age, gender, and functional level. Campers work on individualized goals established by the camper, parents, and staff, and are supported with praise and a point system that can be used at a weekly store, with every camper earning Camper of the Day before they leave.
• Schedule: Intensive 6-week, 30 hours/week summer program 6/15/26–7/24/26; afterschool program operates 30 weeks at 2 hours/week with 3 separate 10-week sessions
Quest Therapeutic Camps runs afterschool programs throughout the school year, with sessions that focus on coping mechanisms and therapeutic activities. Afterschool programs operate 4–6 pm on Mondays and Thursdays. Goals are developed based on parent and child input, staff observations, and IEP goals related to emotional and social functioning, and not all Quest campers are ESY students. Three counselors direct each group and oversee safety, fun, and progress for each camper, and group therapy uses specially developed hands-on therapy activities and discussion in a camp setting that is described as fun and sometimes silly. Three research studies demonstrated the summer program’s strong treatment effect, showing significant progress in emotional and social functioning, and Quest’s evidence-based program may qualify for reimbursement and ABA funding. All children with mild to moderate emotional and social issues are welcome to attend, and RCEB clients can join the afterschool programs with RCEB coverage, using a code to register.
Quest Therapeutic Camps was founded by Robert Field, PhD, a California Licensed Psychologist (PSY 5705), who opened his private practice specializing in work with children and adolescents in 1978. Summer staff includes five therapists with at least a master’s degree in counseling, and many counselor staff are working on graduate training in counseling or have significant experience with children. Dr. Field and other therapists provide daily group therapy and needed intervention to assist counselors in their efforts to produce positive change, and Quest notes that few programs have the same level of mental health professionals and counselor staff.
Quest is vendorized by the Regional Center of the East Bay and is an approved ESY program. Quest works closely with school districts to provide a unique individualized program for each camper, and not all Quest campers are ESY students. Partial scholarships are available thanks to the Autistic Spectrum Disorder Foundation, and limited scholarships are available. One parent stated, “Quest keeps my kid engaged, and all the other programs we've tried have failed to do that.”
