About
Davis AquaMonsters is a swim team that offers swim practice, swim meets, and several structured programs, including the Little Monsters swim program, the Big Monsters swim program, and the AquaMonsters main swim program. Swimmers participate in a variety of meets such as dual meets, tri-meets, double-header meets, invitational meets, League Championships, the Meet of Champions (MOC), and the Summer Classic invitational meet. The team also takes part in Summer recreation swim team activities and USA Swimming competition through Fall USA swimming and year-round USA swimming options.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: The summer recreation swim league season begins each year on April 1, Fall USA meets run from September to December, and the USA Swimming year-round program for ages 14–18 runs 50 weeks per year with a 2-week break each August.
• Price: C Zone parking rates at UC Davis are $4.50 a day for affiliated and $15 for non-affiliated.
The Little Monsters program focuses on comfort in the water, listening and following coach directions, air exchange, developing kicking and leg strength, and developing freestyle and backstroke. The program notes that it takes about three summers of practice, or about 100–150 hours, to learn how to swim and become proficient at swimming. Required training equipment is referenced through a Required Training Equipment link, and swimmers must be registered with USA Swimming to participate in Fall USA meets.
At meets, after check-in, swimmers go to the appropriate age group tent, have their assigned event number written on their arm, and then do warm-ups with a coach. Parents set up their area with items such as a tent or blanket and then go to their volunteer positions. Younger kids are expected to take care of their goggles and drink water at meets, while older kids are expected to manage their equipment, pack for meets, use sunblock, nourish themselves with fluids and food, and get a good night’s sleep the night before meets. AM meets normally start at 8:30 and end around 1pm, PM meets typically start at 4pm and end around 9pm, and arrival time for meets is normally between 7am and 7:15am.
Davis AquaMonsters has three levels of programming: Little Monsters for ages 4–5 in summer only, Big Monsters for ages 5–8 in spring, summer, and fall, and AquaMonsters for ages 8–18 in summer, fall, winter, March, and spring sessions. The team participates as a Summer recreational team in the Sacramento Swim League and races under the USA team name UCD Aquatics for Fall USA meets. USA Swimming options include Fall USA for ages 8–13 from September to December and a year-round USA program for ages 14–18 that runs 50 weeks per year.
The Summer Classic is the end-of-summer invitational meet that includes the entire team, including USA and Summer AQM swimmers. Swimmers can earn RED or BLACK monster towels by obtaining a certain number of personal best times, with RED towels being more common and fewer than 25 BLACK towels earned throughout the years. Meets are run solely by volunteers, and volunteering is mandatory if a child swims in a meet. The team pays for each swimmer's league fees for meets, so meets are free for families in that context, and parking on the UC Davis campus is enforced year-round and can be paid via the AggiePark AMP Park app.
The Davis Aquamonsters.org site footer lists ©2006–2021. The organization is described as a nonprofit organization and is a member of the Sacramento Swim League.
