Davis AquaMonsters Swim Team has three levels of programming: Little Monsters (ages 4–7), Big Monsters (ages 5–8), and AquaMonsters (ages 8–18). Little Monsters focuses on comfort in the water, listening to and following coach directions, air exchange, developing kicking for leg strength, and developing freestyle and backstroke. Big Monsters expands on Little Monsters by offering exercise and instruction on an almost year-round basis. AquaMonsters is the main program for ages 8–18 and includes becoming proficient in swimming, developing competitive skills as part of the AquaMonster community, and USA Swimming options. Some families choose to never participate in a swim meet, and this is acceptable within the program.

The team offers Fall USA for summer recreation swimmers ages 8–13 from October to December and year-round USA Swimming for ages 14–18, scheduled 50 weeks per year with a 2-week break each August. It takes about three summers of practice, or about 100–150 hours, to learn how to swim and become proficient at swimming. Top swimmers who race at the National level have spent more than 10 years practicing the four strokes of swimming.

Davis AquaMonsters Swim Team is a member of the Sacramento Swim League and participates as a summer recreational team within the league. The Summer Classic is an end-of-summer invitational meet held over Labor Day weekend that includes the entire team, both USA and Summer AquaMonsters. The team pays each swimmer’s league fees for meets, so meets are free for families in that context.

Davis AquaMonsters is a nonprofit organization, and meets are run solely by volunteers who are parents. There is a mandatory volunteer requirement that if a child swims in a meet, a parent must take a volunteer position. All swimmers must check in or be scratched before the meet program can be run, then go to their Age Group Tent to have event numbers written on their arm, find a coach, and do warm-ups.

Little Monsters sessions emphasize kicking as their “swimming engine” and developing freestyle and backstroke. Younger kids are expected to take care of their goggles and drink water at meets to stay hydrated. Older kids are responsible for taking care of their equipment, packing for meets, putting on sunblock, nourishing their bodies with fluids and food, and getting a good night’s sleep the night before. Required training equipment is mentioned but not specified.

Swimmers can earn RED or BLACK monster towels based on achieving a certain number of personal best times, and these towels cannot be purchased and must be earned. Approximately 85 RED towels were earned last year, and fewer than 25 BLACK towels have been earned throughout the years. AggiePark via the AMP Park app allows drivers to pay for parking by phone on the UC Davis campus.

The Davis Aquamonsters state that they are a Davis-based swim team where kids learn to swim, cultivate friendships, compete, and have fun in the water. The program lists Sue Peri as the contact for accounts and registration and Sara McKechnie for swim team questions. The team’s materials reference ©2006–2021 DavisAquamonsters.org. One testimonial shared by the program is a quote from Brené Brown about raising children who are hopeful and have the courage to be vulnerable by letting them experience disappointment, conflict, and the opportunity to fail.
