Maui Surf Academy states that beginner and first time surfers are a specialty and that it can accommodate surfers of any level with personalized classes to suit individual learning needs. The program describes its instructors as patient and skilled and notes that they will be with surfers from the sand to the sea every step of the way. The program states that if a surfer does not stand up and ride a wave, the lesson is free, with refunds given if the surfer is in reasonable shape and surfs for the duration of the lesson.

Owner and head instructor Matthew Allen is a surfer, big wave surfer, and active duty United States Navy search and rescue swimmer. He has been teaching surfing since 2003, has taught nationally and internationally, and has operated Maui Surf Academy since 2010. Matthew Allen learned to teach surfing from the Kinimaka family while living on Maui and Kauai. He has been featured on MTV’s Living Lahaina in 2007, coached for the Sage Creek High School surf team, and coached clients in the WSA and SSS West Coast competition circuits. He coached Sage Creek High School to an undefeated first season in 2015/16 and has competed in WSA and for The Swamis Club in the West Coast Coalition of Surf Club Events. In 2021, he took first place in the Malibu Surfing Association’s MSA Classic Invitational longboard competition.

Testimonials from families mention experiences with both group camps and private lessons. One parent from California reports that two children, ages 10 and 7, have been attending Maui Surf Academy camps for several summers and that their skills improve each year. Another parent from New York describes a one-hour private lesson in which an instructor had their daughter standing up and riding waves quickly and notes that they were able to book the lesson by texting and sending a deposit via Venmo. A participant from Missouri describes Matthew Allen as funny and says he makes surfing easy and enjoyable.
