Ichen Art Academy is a family-owned institution with a systematic K–12 visual art curriculum, small class sizes, college portfolio programs, and summer and intensive programs such as boot camps, competition preparation, and accelerated skill-building. The program offers personalized college guidance, a free trial, a free consultation for program selection, and a program finder to explore summer art programs, with a stated focus on artistic quality and serving as a gateway to top-tier higher education in both art and non-art fields. The academy’s mission is to educate students artistically and intellectually through structured K–12 visual art education that builds technical mastery and creative confidence from elementary discovery through college portfolio preparation.
Principal and founder Ichen Wu has over 30 years of teaching experience, holds a Master of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, is a K–12 art education specialist, and is described as a college portfolio expert. The school was founded in 2011, and Ichen Wu has taught in the Bay Area since 1997, with results under her leadership described over a 15-year period. Ichen Art Academy holds WASC accreditation and reports more than 100 perfect scores on AP Studio Art exams, 12 Harvard and Stanford acceptances for non-art majors, 7 ArtCenter Entertainment Design acceptances in 2025, California’s only Gold Medal Portfolio recipient in 2025, and over 60 placements at top-30 universities across all majors, along with repeated Gold Keys and top awards in regional and national competitions.
Parent and student testimonials describe long-term enrollment, including over 7 years for one family’s two daughters and over 4 years for a student whose AP and college portfolios contributed to successful MIT and Harvard applications. Other testimonials mention a student earning a 5 on the AP Art portfolio and admission to ArtCenter College of Art and Design, and a parent noting a daughter’s acceptance to what they describe as the #1 fashion school in the U.S. Several testimonials also describe specific class experiences, including the AP art program with media such as mandalas, collage, and inking, and the newer digital painting class that uses MAYA 3D and 3D modeling.
