About
Rachel's Ballet offers training in classical ballet, contemporary dance, lyrical, and jazz. The program includes a Dance to Your Own Tune class, a Junior Competition Team, a Pre-Professional Dance Company, and two main performances each year: The Nutcracker Ballet and an Annual Showcase.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
Rachel's Ballet has operated as a local dance school for over 25 years and follows the syllabus of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). It is described as an award winning ballet school with beginner through advanced ballet, a full year program for RAD ballet training, and other dance disciplines. The school notes that RAD qualified instructors are required to attend workshops annually, and that the RAD program provides a standard of learning that allows students to move between countries or states and continue with the same syllabus. Students as young as three years old who are toilet trained and developmentally ready can take the Dance to Your Own Tune class, and it is stated that ideally dancers turn three before August 1 to join the fall session.
The leadership team includes founder and director Rachel Tan, who is also an instructor and choreographer, along with Ashley Bishop as PPDC Coordinator, Barbara Campbell as an instructor, and Hilary Chu as administrator. Ms. Rachel Tan is a certified teacher of the Royal Academy of Dance (London) and is qualified to enter pupils for Royal Academy Grades and Major examinations, is a graduate of the University of Washington with a major in Communications and a minor in Dance and Education, was trained in the Royal Academy of Dance and Imperial Society techniques, and is a member of Dance Masters of America. Ms. Ashley is a registered teacher for the Royal Academy of Dance and a graduate of the Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies programme, and Ms. Barbara earned her MA in Dance from Mills College in Oakland. The program notes that it has 150+ current students and 16+ regular and guest teachers.
Rachel's Ballet states its mission as “Training and Inspiring Dancers and Teachers of Tomorrow” and “We seek to inspire our students and transform their lives with this art form.” The program presents free-to-public performances of The Nutcracker Ballet at Temple Hill in Oakland and an all-student Annual Showcase performance at Ohlone College in Fremont. The Junior Competition Team and Pre-Professional Dance Company participate in regional and national competitions. The school notes that yearly examinations offer children an annual goal and a worldwide standard of progress through RAD, and that students have had opportunities such as RAD Solo Seal Awards, acceptance to university dance programs, awards and scholarships at competition events, attendance at selective summer dance intensives, participation as chorus member/dancer in Broadway productions, acceptance to English National Ballet School in London, and participation in the Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition.
Parent comments include thanks for a “great show for the kids and the community” and mention of “the confidence that I saw in the dancers” (Shruti), praise for a “beautifully executed Nutcracker performance” where “all of the girls danced well and looked so very well prepared” (Kristine R.), and appreciation for “the impressive and awesome Nutcracker” from a family whose 5-year-old daughter had previously studied ballet in Taiwan and wanted to perform like the dancers in the show (I-Fan).
