The Sacramento State Aquatic Center was established in 1981 and operates as a cooperative effort of Associated Students Inc. of California State University, Sacramento, the University Union of Sac State, the California Division of Boating and Waterways, the California Department of Parks and Recreation, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the community. Its mission is to provide high quality boating and safety programs through education, recreation, and competition. The center has been recognized by the National Safe Boating Council and Western States Boating Administrators Association with the Boating Education Advancement Award and is a national boating safety center as part of a program funded by the California State Parks Division of Boating & Waterways. A portion of the equipment at the center is provided by the California Department of Boating and Waterways to enhance boating safety education in California.

The leadership team includes Director Brian Dulgar, Associate Director Cindi Dulgar, Operations Manager Heather Wilhelmi, Rowing Manager DeDe Birch, Facilities/Shop Supervisor Russell Moran, Water Front Supervisor Clayton Eckstein, Administrative Specialist Katie Ellis, Operations Assistant John Tran, Water Front Program Specialist Emily Jakel, and a Weekend Supervisor listed as TBA. The Aquatic Center offers a Counselor-in-Training (C.I.T.) program for previous campers ages 14 to 17, and the C.I.T. program is described as an amazing opportunity to learn teamwork, responsibility, and the satisfaction that accompanies a job well done, with interviews for C.I.T. volunteer positions taking place in May. The center is open to students, faculty, staff, and alumni of Sac State as well as the general public, and all Sac State students, faculty, staff, and alumni receive a discount with their Sac State identification card. Families are instructed to make sure to always bring a photo ID and one set of car keys.
