About
AYSO EPIC Program - North Valley Region 174 offers soccer for athletes with disabilities. The program uses small, coeducational teams that are balanced by size, mobility, and ability rather than by age. EPIC teams may include players who are blind or visually impaired, autistic, amputees, or those with conditions that impair mobility, Down Syndrome, mental or emotional challenges, or Cerebral Palsy.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Season runs from early September to mid-November, with one weekday practice and games on Saturday mornings
• Price: Registration fee: $135
AYSO has rebranded its VIP Program to EPIC, which stands for Everyone Plays In our Community. The EPIC Program is open for all athletes with disabilities from ages 4–99, and there are no try-outs. The mission of the AYSO EPIC Program is to provide athletes with disabilities the additional support they need to fully participate in a quality soccer experience. EPIC provides integration with non-disabled people called “buddies,” who assist EPIC players on the field, and the use of EPIC Buddies may support players during the game and create an additional element of positive coaching and support. Family members are involved in learning soccer fundamentals to support the development of their players and are encouraged to model good sportsmanship by cheering from the sidelines for all players. EPIC provides a quality soccer experience for children and adults aged 4 and up whose physical or mental disabilities make it difficult to successfully participate on mainstream teams, and it benefits buddies and other volunteers by increasing their understanding and appreciation of people with special needs. Launched in 1991, AYSO’s VIP Program was established to give players with intellectual and physical challenges the opportunity to play and enjoy the game.
