About

AYSO EPIC Program - North Valley Region 174 offers soccer for athletes with disabilities. The program uses EPIC Buddies, who are non-disabled players that assist EPIC players on the field. EPIC teams are typically small and coeducational and are balanced by size, mobility, and ability rather than by age.

• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Season runs from early September to mid-November, with one practice during the week and all games on Saturday morning
• Price: Registration fee: $130

AYSO has rebranded its VIP Program to EPIC, which stands for Everyone Plays In our Community. The EPIC rebrand is intended to remind AYSO members and the surrounding community that AYSO is a place that everyone can play, no matter their ability. The AYSO EPIC Program is open for all athletes with disabilities from ages 4–99, and there are no try-outs, so all players are welcome. The AYSO EPIC provides a soccer experience for children and adults aged 4 and up whose physical or mental disabilities make it difficult to successfully participate on mainstream teams. EPIC teams may include, but are not limited to, players who are blind or visually impaired, autistic, amputees or have conditions that impair mobility, Down syndrome, mental or emotional challenges, or cerebral palsy. When numbers allow, older and younger age divisions may be formed, and there are no upper age limits for EPIC players.

The mission of the AYSO EPIC Program is to provide athletes with disabilities the additional support they need to fully participate in a quality soccer experience. EPIC provides integration with non-disabled people, called “buddies,” who assist EPIC players on the field, and the use of EPIC Buddies may support players during the game and create an additional element of positive coaching and support. Family members are involved in learning soccer fundamentals to support the development of their players and are encouraged to model good sportsmanship by cheering from the sidelines for all players. Players are encouraged to participate in physical movement at their individual level. The ultimate goal of the AYSO EPIC Program is to provide a holistic AYSO experience for players, families, and volunteers, from team uniforms to playing on a team to cheering from the sidelines for all participants. There are a wide variety of ability levels and sizes on EPIC teams, and flexibility is described as the key.

Launched in 1991, AYSO’s VIP Program was established to give players with intellectual and physical challenges the opportunity to play and enjoy the game, and this program has since been rebranded as EPIC.
