About
E-Sports offers free, weekly inclusive sports programs where kids take part in soccer, basketball, martial arts, fitness, dance, football, and warmups and activities. No experience is necessary for a child to participate in an E-Sports program, and most E-Sports sessions are broken up by age group. Activities are led by volunteer coaches across these different sports.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: A typical Saturday morning session is comprised of warmups and activities.
• Price: E-Sports are free, weekly athletic programs that apply inclusion.
Since the launch of E-Soccer in 2000, E-Sports has expanded from a grassroots neighborhood soccer program in Foster City, CA to multiple inclusive sports programs serving hundreds of families annually around the Bay Area and internationally. E-Sports includes several Bay Area community service programs that specialize in inclusion, partnering kids with typical and special needs alongside each other in various athletic capacities. These programs have pioneered the inclusive sports philosophy and made an impact on families from California to Kenya, and now include the same inclusive experience across six different sports: soccer, basketball, martial arts, fitness, dance, and football. E-Soccer has been featured at 11 locations, E-Hoops at 7 locations, E-Karate at 2 locations, E-Dance at 3 locations, and E-Fitness at 1 location.
The E-Sports mission states that inclusion is all about building relationships, and that E-Sports is as much about kids’ social experience and building lasting friendships as it is about developing athletic skills and teamwork. Since its inception in 2000, E-Sports has received notable recognition both locally and nationally. Founder Russ Ewell received a Congressional Citation in 2007 from US Congressman Tom Lantos for the E-Soccer program, and in the same year he was awarded the Jefferson Award in recognition of his positive impact on the youth of the Bay Area community.
The leadership team includes Founder Russ Ewell; Co-Founder/Director Greg Bodzioch; Community Engagement Directors and E-Hoops Directors Ray and Amy Kim; E-Fitness Director Brian Nitta; E-Dance Directors Bernard and Tracey Jones; E-Karate Directors Brendan and Kim Murray; Head Coaching Coordinator for E-Soccer Gerry Iroaga; and Inclusive Training Coordinator Jynette Oji. The leadership team is described as being comprised of coaches, athletes, and visionaries who have built and continue to direct the E-Sports programs, and each of these leaders is described as providing invaluable experience and a passion to advocate for inclusion.
E-Sports includes several Bay Area community service programs that have developed growing partnerships with the San Jose Earthquakes, Golden State Warriors, and other Bay Area sports entities. The Warriors invite E-Hoops to scrimmage at halftime for their annual Special Needs Family Appreciation Night, and the USF men’s and women’s basketball teams have chosen to work with E-Hoops San Francisco as a community service endeavor. CNN Philippines has covered E-Soccer after a launch in Manila.
