About

E-Sports offers free, weekly inclusive sports programs where kids participate in soccer, basketball, martial arts, fitness, dance, and football. A typical Saturday morning session is comprised of warmups and activities led by volunteer coaches for both typical and special needs kids, and most sessions are broken up by age group. No experience is necessary to participate in any of these activities, only the desire to make friends and have fun.

• Schedule: Free, weekly athletic programs

The inception of E-Sports began during an afternoon car ride in April 2000, and since the launch of E-Soccer that year, E-Sports has expanded to offer the same inclusive experience across six different sports. E-Sports includes several Bay Area community service programs that specialize in inclusion, which partner kids with typical and special needs alongside each other in various athletic capacities. These programs have pioneered the inclusive sports philosophy and made an impact on families from California to Kenya, and they also offer Inclusion Toolkit resources and the opportunity to start a new E-Program in a city or neighborhood. The mission of E-Sports is “Exceptional Sports Empowering kids to reach their full athletic and social potential,” and the organization states that it is as much about kids’ social experience and building lasting friendships as it is about developing athletic skills and teamwork.

E-Sports lists a leadership team that includes Founder Russ Ewell; Co-Founder/Director Greg Bodzioch; Community Engagement Directors and E-Hoops Directors Ray and Amy Kim; E-Fitness Director Brian Nitta; E-Dance Directors Bernard and Tracey Jones; E-Karate Directors Brendan and Kim Murray; Head Coaching Coordinator for E-Soccer Gerry Iroaga; and Inclusive Training Coordinator Jynette Oji. Founder Russ Ewell has received a Congressional Citation from U.S. Congressman Tom Lantos for the E-Soccer program and has been awarded the Jefferson Award in recognition of his impact on the youth of the Bay Area community. E-Sports now has growing partnerships with the San Jose Earthquakes, the Golden State Warriors, and other Bay Area sports entities.
