During each class, the first 60–70 minutes are spent in groups based on skill level or paired with friends, and the last 20–30 minutes are free play style games with occasional feedback.

• Ages: 10–15 years old
• Schedule: The first 60–70 minutes of each class are structured drills and skills in groups, followed by 20–30 minutes of free play style games

Hermosa Volleyball Academy youth class is designed to be engaging, social, and fun, with a focus on enjoying the beach while learning and improving beach volleyball skills and establishing good habits so young players can progress quickly. Drills are structured to maximize frequent ball contacts, and some aspects of play are customized based on participant skill level, such as moving the server closer to the net or shrinking the court size to prolong rallies. Participants are paired with others of similar skill level, and youth class sessions are synced with adult classes so the whole family can attend together. Classes are limited to 15 participants (20 for beginners), and most classes have two or more instructors. Hermosa Volleyball Academy is a family-run business, and Kelly Collins teaches the youth volleyball class with her son Bryce as her assistant. New shirts, shorts, and sweaters are available for purchase at classes.

Hermosa Volleyball Academy has been the most attended beach volleyball classes in Southern California for over 30 years. Dennis Collins has been coaching volleyball for nearly 40 years, including 36 years coaching on the beach, and was an AVP and Open Beach Pro qualifier, Masters CBVA National Champion, and Surfest 6 Man champ. Volleyball Ventures, led by Head Tourney Director and owner Patrick Mejia, is a 36-year local organization that hosts tournaments in Manhattan and Hermosa Beach. The leadership team for the youth class includes Dennis Collins, Patrick Mejia, Jesus Mejia, Kelly Collins, and Bryce as an assistant in the youth volleyball class.

Dennis Collins is a former AAA rated player and pro qualifier who competed in the 1990s and early 2000s against some of the biggest names in the sport, and he is also a registered ergonomist who has analyzed physical motions in many industrial occupations for numerous Fortune 100 companies. Patrick Mejia has been coaching for over 24 years and has led teams to undefeated winning seasons for years, and he enjoys organizing group trips such as wine tasting, river rafting, and ski or snowboarding trips to create a social community for the volleyball family. Jesus Mejia has a background in teaching physical education for students in grades K–5. Kelly Collins has been playing volleyball in Hermosa for over two decades and has 23 years of experience working in special education with children of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. The beach volleyball community has given a lot to Jesus, and he has chosen to give back by joining the team on Sundays to provide classes in a fun and social atmosphere.

Families and players have shared detailed feedback about their experiences. One parent, Annette Coronado, described how her sons began learning from Dennis as children; Jevan later became a member of the 2018 NCAA National Championship Men’s Volleyball team at Long Beach State, a former Cal Cup state champion, and a trainee with the Costa Rica men’s national team, while Jason became a Cal Cup state champion, a Team USA HP A1 beach volleyball athlete for three years, and a member of his junior high’s undefeated league champion indoor team. Another parent, Loanne Cheng, said her family loves the classes, noted that there is something for every skill level, and described it as a family bonding class with very nice and patient coaches that she would recommend to everyone. Loana Crz, a sport coach in gymnastics, stated that she admires Dennis Collins, finds that he makes volleyball technique easy to understand, works with all kinds of physical abilities, and teaches strategic play so that even a not-so-tall hitter can succeed on the court. Brandie Gasper shared that she and her husband signed up about two years ago, worked through different levels, found the coaches awesome, patient, and encouraging, and met many friends through the class, and she tries to convince others to sign up. Andy Applegate said that he and his wife started as novices at beach volleyball, felt welcome from the first class with Dennis, enjoyed the group setting, and found it fun and easy for two beginners.
