• Ages: 3–5 years old
• Schedule: Saturday morning classes from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm
Orange Coast Gakuen was established in 1975 and became independent in 2010. After becoming independent, the school instituted a new curriculum based on interactive, context-based teaching and learning. The program’s mission states that it is committed to teaching Japanese to all children, regardless of background and level of Japanese, and to integrating instruction in language and culture in an enjoyable and nurturing environment.
Orange Coast Gakuen is one of the oldest and largest Japanese language schools in Orange County and is an independent, parent-run, parent volunteer-based organization. The school has no principal or single decision maker; decisions are made through collaboration among the Parents Association, the Orange Coast Gakuen Board of Trustees, and the teachers. The Parents Association arranges cultural events throughout the school year and raises funds for the operation of the school. Current families can use a parent portal to view statements, make payments, and edit student information. Orange Coast Gakuen is listed in the Highlighted Programs of the Keisho Nihongo Platform, established by the Japan Foundation Los Angeles. Students at the school range from preschool through adult classes, and the program teaches students from all backgrounds and prior exposure levels to the Japanese language. The school emphasizes immersing students in Japanese cultural experiences in a welcoming and nurturing environment that builds community, and states that its goal is for students to enjoy learning and want to continue to study Japanese, hopefully for a lifetime. The program notes that its classes are full for the 2024–2025 school year.
