About

UCI Brain Camp is a two-week full-day summer program where students take part in lectures and seminars, workshops, laboratory tours, dissections, and other hands-on activities and experiments focused on neuroscience. Participants engage in hands-on laboratory work using tools, techniques, and technologies used in neuroscience laboratories at UC Irvine, including electrophysiology, brain imaging, animal models, optogenetics, and DREADDs. During the second week, students design experiments, analyze data, and present their work to their families as well as to an audience of UC Irvine neuroscience faculty and students, and explore topics such as brain and spinal cord anatomy, sensation and perception, learning and memory, brain-machine interface, neuropathology, neuropharmacology, and comparative neuroanatomy.

• Ages: 11–18 years old
• Schedule: Two-week full-day camp, July 20–July 31, 2026, with camp hours from 9am–4pm

UCI Brain Camp is a summer program for middle and high school students that offers an opportunity for immersion in neuroscience and includes workshops on experimental design, data analysis, scientific communication and public speaking, and neuroethics. Manuella Oliveira Yassa, Ph.D., founded UCI Brain Camp in 2019 as the only neuroscience summer camp in Orange County and one of only a handful in the world. The leadership team includes Manuella Oliveira Yassa, Ph.D. (Director), Morgan Coburn, Ph.D. (Assistant Director, Office of Outreach and Education and Assistant Director of UCI Brain Camp), Erin M. Purvis Conway, Ph.D. (Civic Science Fellow), and Raymond D. Villareal, Ed.S., NCSP (Outreach and Education Assistant). Staff credentials include advanced degrees from institutions such as the University of California, Irvine; Johns Hopkins University; Mount Holyoke College; the University of Pennsylvania; the University of California, Santa Barbara; and the College of William and Mary. Need-based scholarships for the 2026 UCI Brain Camp are available, and refunds are accepted up until 30 days before the first day of camp minus a 20% processing fee, with a 50% refund available within 30 days before the first day of camp and no refunds within 14 days before the first day of camp unless a replacement is found, in which case a refund is granted minus a 20% processing fee. The UC Irvine Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (CNLM), established by the UC Regents in 1983, has educated hundreds of graduate and postdoctoral researchers and thousands of undergraduate students in its forty-two-year history and extends gratitude to the Friends of the CNLM for their support. As a Civic Science Fellow at the CNLM, Erin M. Purvis Conway works to strengthen partnerships between UCI researchers and the local community, and in her role, Morgan Coburn works to advance the Outreach and Education mission of the CNLM to create accessible, equitable, and high-quality learning experiences in partnership with communities. Money has recognized UC Irvine as the #1 Best college in the US.
