About
La Verne Parent Participation Preschool is a cooperative preschool where caregiver participation is part of the educational environment. The program includes specific activities such as a Bike-A-Thon and uses a developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum. Play-based learning, collaboration, and community are described as being at the heart of what the program does.
• Ages: 1–5 years old
• Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9am–12pm
La Verne Parent Participation Preschool was established as a parent nursery school in Claremont in 1971, moved to La Verne and renamed Los Chiquitos in 1974, and received its current name in 1983 after a general membership vote. The program is described as a non-profit, non-discriminatory family organization owned and operated by member families in the co-op tradition, with a board composed of elected parent members who oversee the operation of the preschool, and families in the cooperative have the power to change policies and guidelines. It is a member of the California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools (CCPPNS).
The program’s mission states that it aims to create a thriving early childhood education program that respects and nurtures the potential in each individual child, teacher, and family, and that it strives to create an environment rich in respect and individuality and that celebrates diversity. The mission also states that the program actively engages families and the community and that it provides a positive and nurturing learning environment for each child. The program states that children 12 months to kindergarten age are provided an educational experience in a safe, nurturing environment to help them grow socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically, and that it supports the philosophy that children are unique and learn differently.
The school community states that it actively works to be as inclusive as possible and has a notice of nondiscriminatory policy admitting students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin and not discriminating on that basis in policies or programs. LVPPP is described as a community partner with the University of La Verne, LaFetra College of Education, which means that university students are able to come into LVPPP classrooms and observe students playing and learning. The Discovery Shed is described as an “extra room” and “a sanctuary where our kids can get messy with paint, explore STEM projects, and let their creativity run wild.”
Parent testimonials describe the teachers as truly loving and caring about the children and creating a very tight-knit, family-like community. Another parent notes that being at a parent-participation school allows caregivers to help out in the classroom and see their children interacting with other kids their age. A further testimonial describes LVPPP as a safe, supportive, and nurturing place for the children and the entire family.
