About

Experience Camps offers one-week overnight summer camp programs that combine the best elements of summer camp with a clinically informed peer-support model. Cabins provide communal living where campers practice cooperation, problem-solving, and respect for each other, while athletic facilities are used for play as a common language of childhood. Campfire pits are used at the end of the day as places for nature, reflection, and quiet time, and campers take part in bereavement activities that include sharing opportunities and expressions of grief.

Experience Camps are free one-week camps for kids and teens who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, or primary caregiver. Experience Camps is a national, no-cost program for grieving children that also offers year-round programs and content. Programs include GRIEF SUCKS, a digital-content platform for grieving teens, and Grief Quest, a virtual scavenger hunt on Roblox that teaches kids how to support grieving people. The program’s one-week overnight summer grief camps, year-round programs, and content are described as reframing the experience of grief and empowering kids with coping skills to move forward with their lives. At Experience Camps, everyone has experienced the loss of someone important, and campers can laugh, cry, play, and honor the memory of the person who died while getting a break from grief. The organization states that at camp, kids learn they are not alone and describes Experience Camps as a beacon of light guiding them back to safer waters.

Each camp is supported by a Clinical Director, who is a licensed, masters-level clinician leading a team of staff specializing in youth development and bereavement assigned to each camper cabin. Each camp also has a clinical team that supports the emotional well-being of campers and volunteers, facilitates peer-support opportunities, and oversees bereavement activities that focus on coping skills, sharing, and expressions of grief. Through the camp environment, campers are learning coping and communication skills in developmentally appropriate ways. Experience Camps, founded in 2009, is described as an award-winning national nonprofit. Its mission is: “We give children experiences that change their lives forever.” One parent testimonial states, “Yes, they lost their loved one, but they have gained a family, a band of brothers.”
