Owner and chef Teri Appleton Villanueva is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, an award-winning pastry chef, head chef, and recipe formulator, and has worked in professional kitchens and taught people to cook for the last 25 years. Owner and chef Jorge Villanueva is a graduate of the School of Kitchen Experience, has cooked for 30 years in professional kitchens including Pioneer Boulangerie, Josephina’s, Ocean Avenue Seafood, Gladstone’s, Malibu Sea Lion, and as Corporate Chef at Wolfgang Puck’s, and is described as a fish and seafood expert, master pizza maker, and excellent Chef Instructor with unparalleled knife skills. The program’s mission is to teach people how to cook by showing them how to select quality ingredients, use proper equipment, and master techniques, providing culinary knowledge and kitchen experience with a side of palate pleasure, and to help people create food to advance in their careers or share with friends and family.
Summer Cooking Camps are described as “THE BEST KID’S COOKING CAMP IN LOS ANGELES!” and feature kid-tastic themes, exclusively formulated recipes, and a dedicated staff of instructors and summer interns. Space is limited to 16 kids per session, with Week 5 limited to 12 kids per session, and the Tweens Cake Bake & Decorate Camp is for ages 10–16. Charter funds may be used for the Kids Monthly Homeschool Cook & Bake Series from specified schools, gift certificates never expire and have no inactivity fee, internships may lead to future employment, and a meal is provided with each internship shift.
Kids are asked to wear closed-toe shoes and clothing they are comfortable cooking in, while the school supplies aprons, side towels, recipes, and all other needed items. Under the guidance of professional chefs, kids learn how to safely and creatively chop, mix, and prepare meals. Ronald McDonald House Long Beach thanked Chef Teri and her crew for hosting an “amazing cooking class,” and a parent named Kathy R. stated that the chefs are patient and kind, meet each child where they are, and that the environment is fun and relaxed without being chaotic.
