The Long Beach Fire Department Junior Lifeguard Summer Program is a 6 week summer program for youth ages 9 to 17 that focuses on strengthening ocean swimming skills, physical fitness, and beach safety awareness. The program gives students experience for future careers as lifeguards or in various public service professions and is associated with the Long Beach Fire Department Junior Lifeguard Program. New Junior Lifeguards must pass a tryout at one of the scheduled tryout dates or at a prep class before they register, and the Junior Lifeguard program has 8 tryouts scheduled from February through May. A Prep Class is available as an opportunity for prospective new Junior Lifeguards to improve their swimming stroke, speed, and confidence in the water.

The program groups participants into Cadets (15–17 years old), A Group (14–17 years old), B Group (12–13 years old), and C Group (9–11 years old). The mission statement explains that the program offers students ages nine to seventeen instruction in lifeguard rescue techniques, first aid, ocean sports, physical conditioning, and marine ecology, and that it focuses on strengthening ocean swimming skills, physical fitness, and beach safety awareness while giving students experience they need for future careers as lifeguards or in various public service professions. Scholarships are available for LBUSD students as part of the program’s community involvement, and email is stated as the best way to contact the program.
