• Ages: 0–12 years old
Since 1986, Pedalheads has run bike, swim, trail riding, and soccer summer camps and lessons for kids, beginning with Pedalheads Swim (formerly Atlantis Programs) founded by Claudia Sjoberg in Vancouver, BC. Over 600,000 kids have taken part in these programs across more than 250 locations in Canada and the US, and the organization reports a Google Reviews rating of 4.8 based on over 2000 submissions. Pedalheads opened its first owned and operated pool in West Vancouver, BC, and the current Founder & CEO is Claudia Sjoberg.
Instructors undergo thorough background checks and receive training in skill development, safety, class management, and program delivery. The programs include summer bike camps for kids 2–12 that take kids from training wheels to riding on the road, swim camps and lessons for kids 4 months and up with longer lessons and smaller classes, soccer camps and classes for kids 2–8 with an emphasis on maximum ball touches and one-on-one coaching, and trail riding camps for kids 4–10 with at least 2 hours of continuous riding. The organization states that it has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying or discrimination of any kind, runs camps and lessons rain or shine with possible adjustments or cancellations in hazardous weather, and may change programs based on air quality and extreme weather guidelines from Canadian and American health agencies. The camp is nut-aware and asks families to avoid bringing nuts if possible.
For swimming lessons, families are asked to send a bathing suit, towel, indoor footwear, a swim diaper for parent and tots classes, and optional goggles and swim cap depending on the pool. For bike camp, kids need a bicycle, a properly fitted bike helmet, water bottle and snack, mosquito repellent, weather-dependent items like rain gear and sunscreen, a small backpack, weather-appropriate clothes, closed-toe athletic shoes, and any required medication such as an EpiPen; all-day campers also need sunscreen, lunch, extra snacks, and a change of clothes. For trail riding camp, kids need a ready-to-ride bike that is at least 14", without training wheels, with front and back hand brakes and gears, a properly fitted bike helmet, a small backpack they can ride with (no cross bags), a water bottle or hydration pack and snack, weather-appropriate clothes, closed-toe athletic shoes (not rain boots or closed-toe sandals), and any required medication such as an EpiPen; all-day campers also need sunscreen, lunch, extra snacks, and a change of clothes.
Pedalheads states that its mission is to inspire kids to believe in themselves by creating “I did it!” moments through swim, bike, trail riding, and soccer programs across North America. Through Pedalheads+, the organization offers no-cost camps and lessons to families with geographical, financial, or other barriers in underserved communities. Founder and CEO Claudia Sjoberg received the 2017 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur TELUS Trailblazer Award.
Parent feedback includes reports of small swim classes with clear summaries after each lesson, a child progressing from not swimming to swimming by the third day, and instructors described as patient and gentle. Other parents describe kids riding many miles in trail camp and still wanting to return, and refer to staff as knowledgeable and the camp as well run.
