About

International Institute of Los Angeles – Child Development Division (Preschool & Child Care Programs) uses the HighScope Curriculum based on active learning and positive interactions with adults and peers. Children are served meals family-style, and an on-site state-of-the-art commercial kitchen prepares and delivers freshly cooked breakfasts, lunches, and snacks to the preschools and other child care centers throughout Los Angeles.

• Ages: 0–13 years old
• Schedule: Staff are available Monday 8am–6pm and Tuesday–Friday 8am–5pm, and most preschool sites have full-day hours from 6:30am–6pm
• Price: Child care and preschool may be free or low-cost for eligible families; voucher-based programs reimburse the cost of child care for low-income families; preschools offer free or low-cost education for children 2–5; subsidized services in the Family Child Care Home Education Network are offered to eligible families for free or at low cost.

The program includes voucher-based programs that reimburse the cost of child care for low-income families with children up to 13 through CalWORKs (Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3) and the Alternative Payment Program. It also includes the Family Child Care Home Education Network (FCCHEN), an educational enrichment program for children 0–13 in quality family child care homes. Part-day and full-day preschool programs use the HighScope Curriculum, and most preschool sites have full-day hours from 6:30am–6pm to accommodate working parents. Children in diapers are welcome in the preschool programs, and meals are served family-style to model healthy practices and support social development.

International Institute of Los Angeles was established in 1914 and became its own nonprofit in 1936 after separating from the YWCA. The mission of International Institute of Los Angeles is to provide transformative services to refugees, immigrants, and working families by promoting self-sufficiency, strengthening resiliency, and honoring cultural identities, and to cultivate an inclusive community where a sense of belonging supports each person’s well-being. The Child Development Division leadership team includes Edith Sanchez, Vice President of Child Development; Lilian Magana, Assistant Division Director, Family Services; Lupe Granados, Assistant Division Director, Programs; Gabriella Arviso, Child Development Manager; and Judith Moreno, Family Services Manager.

International Institute of Los Angeles provides services throughout Greater Los Angeles, including free to low-cost child care and nutrition programs, and engages in collaborations and partnerships with community leaders, organizations, and government agencies. One parent shared, “The school hours are favorable to my needs. The teachers are very warm to and that makes want to go to school without hesitation… As a parent I trust the staff — that my child is in good hands.”
