Since 1999, Upstage Theatre Schools has been serving the greater Los Angeles community and is celebrating 25 years. Upstage Theatre Programs provide after-school performing arts education for young people and are founded on the principle that theatre should be fair and fun, with ensemble casting, reasonable rehearsal hours, and a safe environment for the child to find their own level in their own time. Upstage for Schools offers after school and in-school enrichment programs for elementary and middle schools, and community programs are described as premier musical theatre programs and classes for kids and teens that are open to everyone.
Upstage teachers are described as highly trained, skilled professionals with a passion for theatre, with the knowledge and sensitivity to understand and work with any child’s personality, and they are fully background checked to teach in the classrooms. The organization notes that it never plays favorites in casting (“fair play” casting), emphasizes fun and support with less stress and more confidence, and presents fully realized shows with sets, lights, sound, and costumes for certain sessions. Many students return year after year and consider Upstage their theatre family.
Upstage’s highly trained staff also travels to area schools to offer in-school programs with fully realized productions on school premises. For families using SPEF Summer School, an Upstage staff member will pick up any SPEF Summer School students at 11:45am and walk them to The Woman’s Club from Marengo Elementary or South Pasadena Middle School.
Parent and student testimonials describe kids gaining confidence in oral presentations, enjoying returning year after year, and having positive experiences with teachers who are described as wonderfully supportive and knowledgeable. One student reports attending about five different performing arts schools and wanting to return to Upstage as soon as possible, and another parent notes scheduling summer vacations around the camp schedule.
