About

Sea Horse Ranch Riding Lessons offers riding lessons and horseback riding lessons, along with horse training and horse boarding. The program includes dressage training, a Dressage Competition Clinic, and an Instructional Schooling Show.

Sea Horse Ranch Riding Lessons is owned by Barbi Breen-Gurley, and Barbi and Geoff started the ranch in 1971 and live on the premises. Sea Horse Ranch began operations in 1971. The stated mission is that a horse’s happiness and a rider’s satisfaction with the facilities and services offered by Sea Horse Ranch are always the main concern.

Barbi Breen-Gurley has been an active dressage trainer and instructor since 1970 after attaining her BHSAI from Moat House, England. She is a USDF Gold Medalist, a Senior Dressage Judge, and a Quadrille Judge. She has been on the USEF Long List and Developing Rider list several times on different horses, has trained eight horses to the Grand Prix level, and currently competes “Vindicator” at the Grand Prix level. Her record with Vindicator includes 5th place in the Grand Prix Freestyle at the 2014 National Dressage Finals in Kentucky, 6th place in the Grand Prix Freestyle at the 2013 National Dressage Finals in Kentucky, Reserve Champion for the Intermediary and Freestyle Finals for CDS and USDF in 2012, and 8th place nationally at the Lamplight Developing Prix St. George Finals in Illinois in 2011. In 2010, she won the champion title for the CDS Grand Prix and Freestyle on “Octango.”

The program features safe stabling, an attentive staff, and welcoming boarders, along with a charming intimate atmosphere and oak tree shaded paths. Long and short term horse boarding is available. Instruction is provided by a professional Grand Prix Dressage rider. Barbi has co-authored the book “Enlightened Riding” and offers workshops, clinics, and demonstrations based on concepts developed at Sea Horse Ranch, and there is also an audio CD series on guided imagery for riders.

The facility includes paddocks, arenas, tack-up areas, good footing, well-lit arenas, and a covered longing riding arena for training when the weather is bad. There is easy access to the beach and trails at Montaña de Oro State Park and views of Morro Rock.

In the community, Barbi helped to start the Coast Mounted Assistance (CMA) in 1973 and remains an active and supporting member. This volunteer organization is part of the California State Parks Volunteers in Parks Program and originally assisted State Park employees to map and construct the trail system within Montaña de Oro State Park.
