About

Shadow Hills Riding School offers a Hunter/Jumper equestrian program that includes riding lessons, horse care, training for both young and experienced horses, and show coaching. The program also provides access to trails as part of its riding activities.

• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Saturday, 9am–7pm

Shadow Hills Riding School is led by Peggy Ginn, who brings over 35 years of experience and established her business in 1983. Peggy was an active member of the internationally affiliated Cahaba Pony Club in Birmingham and reached the B Level in the United States Pony Club. She holds a B.S. degree in animal science with a focus on equine studies from Auburn University and served as a Barn Manager and Assistant Trainer at Goose Downs, a prominent 3-Day Eventing facility in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is a seasoned Jumper rider who actively competes on the A Circuit. Her husband Launnie, to whom she has been married for 39 years, is a musician and is experienced and insured to help with hauling.

The program’s stated mission is to provide a robust foundation while also presenting opportunities for advancement and competition, and to instill confidence, patience, and responsibility through lessons that go beyond the basics of riding and horse care. Before a first lesson, families must fill out a Liability Waiver and email the completed version to Peggy.

Parents and riders describe Peggy as an amazing riding teacher who shares her knowledge, experience, and love of horses with all levels, and they report that riders have learned about riding, responsibilities, and life from her. Riders note that safety and horsemanship education are key parts of her lessons, along with core strength, balance, position, and feel, and they describe her lessons as focused and attentive. Long-term students say she provides a safe and supportive atmosphere, promotes learning and fun for both rider and horse, and pushes riders to be the strongest they can be at home and at shows. Families who have ridden with her for several years say she has given them a strong foundation and met riders where they were as nervous riders, and they recommend her, her horses, and her program.
