Give Every Child A Chance Programs began in October 1997 after meetings with community leaders led to its formation. The organization was founded by Antone E. Raymus, with founding board members including Antone E. Raymus, Anita Rankin, Chuck Crutchfield, Bill Pinto, Francis Darling, Bill Jones, Sandy Dye-Miller, Gordon Richardson, Evelyn Moore, Pastor Mark Rindels, Rex Osborn, Cheryl Spiegel, Carlon Perry, Claire Yeakel, and Honorable Judge Duane Martin. Honorary board members posthumously include Antone E. Raymus, Honorable Judge Duane Martin, Bill Jones, John Harris, Claire Yeakel, Francis Darling, Chuck Crutchfield, Jack Snyder, Bill Pinto, Mary Lou Kahl, and Pastor Mark Rindels.
The program’s mission statement says it believes every child should be given a chance to be successful, and that community volunteers working as academic mentors and tutors together with school districts provide assistance to children struggling in school with the opportunity to improve academically and become successful lifelong learners. Give Every Child A Chance Programs pairs students earning below-average grades with dedicated volunteer mentors for weekly one-on-one mentoring sessions and describes itself as a premier youth-serving organization dedicated to the growth and development of young people. Programs are supported by volunteers, staff, and a Board of Directors, and volunteering is framed as discovering “your power with just one hour.”
Give Every Child A Chance partners with River Islands Academies and the Manteca Unified School District to lead expanded learning efforts across the South San Joaquin Valley. Community volunteers work as academic mentors and tutors, local high school students can apply for annual Service Challenge Scholarships, and volunteers and sponsors can support students and help at community and fundraising events. Service Challenge Scholarships are offered annually for local high school students.
Parent and student comments about the program include a parent at Joshua Cowell who says their son looks forward to going to his tutoring, and a parent at Sequoia who says their daughter has been improving in all aspects since she started tutoring. A student at the Ripon Branch Library says their tutor makes them understand math assignments a lot more than at the beginning, and a student at River Islands Technology Academy describes their tutor as the best teacher in the world and wishes her a great year.
To come to the office, an appointment is required and masks are required at all times. Offices are closed on New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day, with closure on the Friday before if the holiday falls on a Saturday and on Monday if it falls on a Sunday.
