The NVYS Summer Chamber Camp for Strings is founded and directed by NVYS Head Coach Yasushi Ogura, and the NVYS Woodwinds & Brass Chamber Camp is designed by the NVYS Artistic Team and Music Director, Dr. Alexander Kahn. Camp participants receive coaching from professional musicians. NVYS states that it is committed to building a diverse welcoming organization and supporting youth in their musical journey.
The 1st Annual NVYS Summer Brass and Woodwinds Chamber Camp is offered in partnership with Festival Napa Valley. NVYS offers performances featuring an NVYS Ensemble in the community or for private events, and all proceeds from these performances benefit the educational programs of NVYS and its musicians. A 10% sibling discount is available, and limited partial scholarships may be available for families with additional financial need, subject to funds available in the scholarship fund at the time a completed scholarship application is submitted.
The camps are open to advanced beginner strings musicians ages 10 to 18 and to intermediate to advanced brass and woodwinds musicians ages 10 to 18. Auditions are open to young musicians ages 8–20 with at least 2 years of public or private music instruction, last about 10 minutes, and consist of scales, a solo piece of the musician’s choice, and sight-reading. Based on their audition, students are placed into the appropriate-level ensemble (NOTES, Sinfonia, Bridge, or Youth Symphony) at the discretion of NVYS music staff. Musicians attending the audition workshop are asked to bring their instruments and a pencil.
A camper testimonial states: “The camp was really challenging, and therefore really helped me improve as a musician. It also made me more confident in my playing and improved my rhythms a lot.” – Justin, Cello, 6 years with NVYS.
