City of Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program

The City of Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program is an ocean-based program where participants practice ocean skill building, physical fitness, and lifeguarding skills. The program includes activities such as entering and exiting the water safely, negotiating the surf and shorebreak, long distance ocean swims, paddling, body surfing, and distance running. Participants also work on identifying and swimming out of a rip current, basic first aid and personal safety, team building, good sportsmanship, and learning and exemplifying S.U.R.F. – Safety, Unity, Respect, Focus.

• Ages: 9–15 years old
• Schedule: 7-week program with 2026 session dates from June 16 to July 30, with Monday through Thursday class options in either a 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. format
