Newport Spirit Run includes running and walking events such as a Half Marathon, 5K race, 5K walk, 1 Mile race, 1 Mile jog/walk, fun run, Kids Beach Dash, and Toddler Trot. The program brings together adults, youth, families, runners, and walkers in multiple race distances at one event.

Since 1983, Newport Spirit Run has brought together schools, families, runners, and the wider Newport Mesa community and is now in its 42nd year. It is presented by Newport Mesa Spirit Run, Inc. (NMSRI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit public benefit corporation led by a volunteer Board of Directors and was originally presented by PTAs from five Newport Beach elementary schools. NMSRI states that it is dedicated to promoting youth fitness and donating event net proceeds to benefit youth education, youth fitness, and other youth causes.
Newport Spirit Run is described as one of Orange County’s longest-running community race events and as Newport Beach’s scenic community running event. It features the Upper Newport Bay Half Marathon, 5K and 1 Mile races, and multiple distances in one race event, from first-time runners and walkers and family fun runs to the Half Marathon. The event includes a Youth & Fitness Expo, a Race Expo & Finish Line Festival with family entertainment, live music, food trucks, recovery zones, fitness vendors, interactive activities for kids, and a race day atmosphere. The Kids Beach Dash is for ages 4 through 6, and the Toddler Trot is for ages 3 and younger.
Race routes go through protected landscapes of Upper Newport Bay, including Back Bay Road and paths, wetlands, and nature reserve areas. The organization states that it is committed to sustainability through greener race practices designed to help reduce waste and protect the natural beauty of Upper Newport Bay. Newport Spirit Run supports local schools, youth sports programs, and the Newport Bay Conservancy, including environmental conservation, restoration, and education efforts throughout Upper Newport Bay and its surrounding watershed through Newport Bay Conservancy as a beneficiary starting in 2026. Beneficiary groups such as schools, youth sports programs, and youth-focused community initiatives can raise funds and engage families through the event, and there are volunteer opportunities to help support the protection of Upper Newport Bay. Newport Spirit Run notes that it appreciates the trust placed in the event by California Fish and Wildlife, Orange County Parks, and the City of Newport Beach in allowing participants to race within an environmentally sensitive area.
