About
Mathnasium is a math-only learning center that uses the Mathnasium Method, a proprietary teaching approach. The program offers personalized learning plans based on an initial diagnostic assessment that pinpoints what each student already knows and what they still need to learn. Instruction includes individualized, face-to-face teaching, homework help as part of sessions, enrichment programs and placement prep for advanced students, and SAT and ACT test prep focused on math, with options for both in-center and live online sessions taught by the same instructors using the same curriculum.

Mathnasium specializes in math-only instruction with specially trained math tutors who are certified in the Mathnasium Method. The program’s mission is to teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it, based on the belief that children are not hardwired to be good or bad at math and that any child can learn, enjoy, and thrive in math with the right materials, instruction, and support. It positions learning math and solving problems as stimulating, rewarding, and fun, and states that it empowers K–12 students of all skill levels to unlock their math potential. All students begin with a diagnostic assessment, and Mathnasium meets children where they are and works from a customized program for any level of mathematics.
The leadership team includes Owner and Center Director Sang Batoff; Assistant Center Director Nathaniel Hamovitz; Lead Instructor Kevin Cavanaugh; and Instructors Ann Balliet, Vanessa Diaz, Nicoo Tabrizi, and Kenny Larsen. Sang Batoff double majored in Mathematics and Music at Hamilton College and taught middle school math for 12 years. Nathaniel Hamovitz graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a B.S. in Applied Math and a minor in Spatial Studies. Kevin Cavanaugh graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy and the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA with degrees in Applied Math and Operations Research. Ann Balliet graduated from Stanford University with a degree in the Humanities. Vanessa Diaz is enrolled as an accounting major at Sonoma State University. Nicoo Tabrizi is a senior at Novato High School, and Kenny Larsen is a student at San Francisco State University aiming to become a middle school teacher.
Mathnasium Novato states that it proudly serves local communities and schools including Novato public schools, Novato private schools, homeschooled students, and Sonoma County schools. Parent testimonials describe increased math skills and confidence, strong communication from tutors and owners, excitement about doing math, and improved report card grades, including a first “A” in math.
