About

The Bike East Bay Education Program offers bike education classes that include Urban Cycling 101 (Day 1 and Day 2), Adult Learn to Ride, 1 Hour Workshops, Family Cycling Workshops, Youth Bike Rodeos, and Beyond Driver’s Ed: Bike Smart, Drive Smart. The program also offers a League Advocacy Workshop at Bike East Bay and trainings for engaging in the public process in order to advocate for better mobility in local communities.

• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Urban Cycling 101: Day 1 is a 2-hour indoor or online webinar workshop for adults and teens with no bike required; Urban Cycling 101: Day 2 is a 5.5-hour on-the-road outdoor class with a bike required; Adult Learn to Ride is a 3-hour workshop for adults and teens with a bike and helmet required; 1 Hour Workshops are 1-hour indoor workshops for adults and teens with no bike required; Family Cycling Workshops are outdoor workshops for adults and youth in approximately grades 2–6; Youth Bike Rodeos are classes for kids ages 7 to 12.
• Price: Classes listed as free include Beyond Driver’s Ed: Bike Smart, Drive Smart; Urban Cycling 101: Day 1 Workshop; Family Cycling Workshop; and Urban Cycling Day 2: On-Road Skills & Traffic Practice; these free classes are funded through grants and support from the Alameda County Transportation Commission, BART, the City of Oakland, Spare the Air Youth, the City of Alameda, Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities, the City of Richmond, Contra Costa Health Services, People for Bikes, Metropolitan Transportation Commission, City of Hayward, and the California Air Resources Board.

The program’s mission is promoting healthy, sustainable communities by making bicycling safe, fun, and accessible, with an approach grounded in mobility justice, community organizing and shared leadership, care and support, and fierce joy. Urban Cycling 101: Day 1 is taught by an instructor certified by the League of American Bicyclists, and the program also offers a League of American Bicyclists-led bike advocacy workshop. The Education Program provides classes for adults, youth, and families throughout Alameda and Contra Costa Counties and includes Green Mobility Ambassadors and a Movement for Safe Streets & Thriving Communities, along with a monthly giving circle with over 700 Bike East Bay members who give monthly. Classes are offered in English, Spanish, and Chinese, and participants have the opportunity to meet instructors and other attendees interested in biking in their community.

Class participants have described the classes as “very useful” and “essential for safety,” and have noted “great, friendly presentation style” and “really well organized, lots of good info.” Other comments from participants include “these are the most patient and sweet instructors,” “looking forward to the next class,” and thanks for offering free classes for the community.
