Children’s Fairyland Summer Day Camp takes place at a whimsical 10-acre storybook park that is described as a magical mid-century fantasy world where young children can create, imagine, play, and learn all day long. The park is one of the first parks designed for children and has historically featured fairytale sets, a carousel, pony rides, a cotton-candy stand, and costumed guides leading children through a fairytale landscape. All storybook sets were crafted by architect William Russell Everitt, and the gardens were designed by businessman Arthur Navlet, with some original plantings still thriving today. Fairyland opened its doors in 1950, achieved nonprofit status in 1994 with the help of the Lake Merritt Breakfast Club, and has been sparking imagination and joy for more than 70 years. The Children’s Theatre program “Fairyland Personalities,” created in 1956, is still part of Fairyland’s Children’s Theatre. Walt Disney visited Fairyland and incorporated some of its ideas into Disneyland, and he hired Fairyland’s first executive director, Dorothy Manes, as well as one of its puppeteers, Bob Mills. The organization’s mission states that Children’s Fairyland remains true to its role as a magical fantasy world where young children can create, imagine, play, and learn, and financial support allows 4,000 low-income children to attend for free each year.

The leadership team includes CEO Kymberly Miller; Senior Director of Education Vicky Chen; Senior Director of Facilities Nick Mitchell; Senior Director of Marketing & Communications Morgan Rothenbaum; Senior Director of Operations Samuel Aguayo; Senior Director of Philanthropy Leslie Fay Marks; and Senior Director of Events Jessica Martin.
