About
Golden Gate Atelier offers traditional drawing and painting, including figure, landscape, and still-life painting, as well as portraiture and figurative art. Students work with constructive drawing, artistic anatomy, perspective, decorative design, and narrative painting, and they draw and paint the human figure from life using sight-size. The program also includes Écorché sculpture, rendering a human portrait from life in oil paint, and art history and humanities courses that introduce the great paintings and ideas of the Western tradition.
• Schedule: Anatomy & Écorché is a visually based, practical 20–24 week course that meets Mondays 6–10pm starting 10/19; the Écorché sculpture course runs 20–24 weeks; the Summer Workshop is a four-day intensive from Thursday–Sunday 8/27–8/30, 10am–4pm.
The Golden Gate Atelier offers a complete classical training for the realist artist, with a curriculum devoted to a disciplined study of the human figure and an oil painting program dedicated to craftsmanship and the skillful use of materials and techniques. Its full-time program is dedicated to the highest standards of drawing and painting, with rigorous project work and daily mentorship and support, and students progress from foundations through to mastery at a pace optimized for them. The visually based anatomy and Écorché program is described as one of the finest in the country and is open to artists of all levels of experience, including beginners and advanced students. Students work in all genres, including still life, landscape, portraiture, and figurative art, and every graduate produces a diploma painting that is a culmination of their time at the atelier. Students draw and paint from life using sight-size, the technique Sargent learned in Paris, and the composition program includes both decorative design and narrative painting. Every member of the faculty has gone through the same rigorous classical training that they teach and has additional backgrounds in the humanities, commercial, and fine arts. The Golden Gate Atelier is ARC Approved™ and is described as ARC Approved™ in its materials, and its graduates are described as well placed to succeed as professional artists. Golden Gate Atelier will visit The Napa Valley Museum of Art & Culture for a special exhibition, The Wyeths: Three Generations.
