The Oakland REACH Liberator Model

The Oakland REACH Liberator Model is a multi-generational approach to improving literacy outcomes. Through this model, The Oakland REACH’s work has directly benefited more than 4,000 students in Oakland. The program also supports the training and retention of around 135 tutors across 38 schools.

The mission of The Oakland REACH is to build multi-generational educational solutions that reject the current status quo in which the average white household makes $180,000 and the average Black household makes $18,000, with education named as a critical catalyst to closing this wealth gap. The organization states that there is a literacy and math crisis in the country and that it builds direct-service solutions, including the Liberator Model, so families can lift literacy and math outcomes for their children and others in their community. Its training solutions, REACH Way Institute & Implementation, bring these solutions to organizations across the country. The organization describes its multi-generational educational solutions as building agency and states that it is on a mission to liberate communities so families can create a life of their own instead of having one chosen for them. The Oakland REACH is supporting the training and retention of around 135 tutors across 38 schools.
