Words in the Wild Summer Camp is a reading camp that merges literacy and outdoor education through playful nature exploration, with literacy embedded in hands-on garden science and connected to arts, cooking, and other enrichment activities. The program uses an evidence-based Structured Word Inquiry approach to language and literacy development and brings the science of reading to the outdoors by teaching reading as a scientific practice. It is designed especially for neurodiverse learners working with dyslexia, ADHD, or other learning differences, and campers are encouraged to attend more than one session with new themes in each session. The program includes a Counselor-in-Training option for rising 6th to 9th graders.
Words in the Wild Summer Camp is taught by educational therapists and Teaching Fellows with experience connecting with diverse learners, including Words in the Wild teaching fellows and lead teachers Alexis Filippini and Ryan Nepomuceno, as well as experienced Words in the Wild educators. All teachers have passed comprehensive background checks. The program was created by Dr. Alexis Filippini and began as a two-week summer camp, Readers and Writers in the Garden, in 2013. Words in the Wild now operates as a mission driven business in partnership with the WitW Foundation, and the heart of its community is its Teaching Fellowship, supported by the Words in the Wild Foundation. The mission of Words in the Wild is to make learning to read and write a joyful pursuit for children and the adults who teach and love them.
