The Bird Science Program introduces schoolchildren to birds through classroom lessons, video lessons, outdoor activities, and a half day field trip. Activities include a bird walk, looking for good habitat where migratory birds can refuel, using a hand lens to see the interlocking structure of a feather, and exploring their surroundings with the hand lens. Children also interact with educational owls from the local wildlife rehab facility Wing Wings of California and play nature-based games.

Pasadena Audubon’s Bird Science Program includes two classroom visits with lessons on birds that adhere to the Next Generation Science Standards, covering topics such as vocalizations, adaptations to flight, feathers, food chains, and habitat. The curriculum has been reworked into video content totaling close to two hours of instruction across six levels of lessons from kindergarten to 5th grade, with every lesson paired with an outdoor activity and a strong message on conservation, including the story of Albie, a fledgling Laysan Albatross who ends up with a belly full of plastic. Each child at Washington Elementary STEM Magnet received a hand lens and a feather, and Project Intern Micah Jaffe teaches kids how to use the hand lens. Each child is assigned “their bird” and adds to their bird knowledge each year through activities designed to build knowledge of birds and conservation issues and to develop a sense of wonder and belonging in the natural world.
Pasadena Audubon Society was founded in 1904, and its mission is to bring the excitement of birds to the community through birding, education, and the conservation of bird habitats. The Bird Science Program is supported in part by funds from the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation and the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, and it is currently offered as an enrichment program to children in Pasadena Unified School District, kindergarten through fifth grade, at Washington Elementary STEAM Magnet School and Jackson STEM Dual Language Magnet Academy. Leadership for Pasadena Audubon Society includes Lois Brunet, Program Director; Luke Tiller, President; Dave Weeshoff, Vice President; Tricia Desmarais, Secretary; Gary Breaux, Treasurer; Jared Nigro, Executive Director; Chris Spurgeon, Program Chair; Emily Allen, Membership Chair; Ashwin Sivakumar, Advisory Board; Fernanda Ezabella, Wrentit Editor; Alex Coffey, Field Trips Chair; Alicia Di Rado, Publicity Chair; Deborah Tammearu, At large Board Member; and Carl Matthies, Programs Coordinator. A professional videographer and editor, Marc Dahm, has donated countless hours to the video project.
