About
Partnership for Success offers five weeks of intensive academic enrichment each summer, with courses in math, science, technology, humanities, and the arts, as well as language arts. The program also includes exposure to art, culture, and athletics, along with service, civic learning, collaborative projects, and community time such as Friday BBQs. Students participate in mentoring, college counseling, and career exploration activities, including connecting with professionals, visiting workplaces, and taking part in workshops and site visits.
• Ages: 9–18 years old
• Schedule: Students spend nine consecutive summers culminating with a transition to college after high school graduation.
• Price: fully funded summer enrichment experience; fully funded summer academic enrichment program
Partnership for Success was founded in 1990 as a collaborative effort between the Pasadena Unified School District and four Pasadena independent schools: Chandler, Mayfield Junior, Polytechnic, and Westridge, and has grown over three decades into a sustained, community-centered program. At each site, students learn from creative, experienced teachers from both public and private school partners, with small class sizes typically limited to 15 learners and an average of 16 students per classroom at some sites. Alumni of Partnership for Success and students and alumni from the independent school partners are eligible to work as paid teaching interns, and many college-age interns are program alumni.
The mission of Partnership for Success is to empower Pasadena Unified School District students to realize their full academic and personal potential through a transformative, fully funded summer enrichment experience that fosters confidence, creativity, leadership, and college and career readiness through dynamic teaching, hands-on learning, and a supportive, inclusive community. The program is a community-based, collaborative public–private school partnership that brings together dedicated educators, engaged alumni, and motivated students from diverse backgrounds, and works with local organizations, cultural institutions, and community leaders so students can engage in service, civic learning, and collaborative projects. Nearly 80% of Scholars are the first in their families to attend college, and 100% of PFS graduates are accepted to college.
One student from the PFS Class of 2024, now at UC Irvine, describes progressing academically and personally over nine summers and learning how to navigate college applications, resumes, and financial aid. Another graduate from the Class of 2024, now at Cal Poly Pomona, shares that summers in PFS included captivating and practical classes and support as a first-generation college student. A third graduate from the Class of 2024, now at Yale, credits tools, connections, and resources from each summer, including one-on-one support during the essay and college application process, and highlights friendships and community built through deep conversations and Friday BBQs.
