Petite Feet Kids Dance Classes offers ballet, creative movement, yoga, Nutcracker dance, Modern/Ballet, Intro to Ballet/Creative Movement, Home School Ballet/Creative Movement, and instructional dance videos. In Petite Feet classes, students build skills, think critically and creatively, and stay active and imaginative. Storytelling, original and familiar songs, and imaginative games are incorporated, and all classes begin with an engaging version of the BrainDance, a warm up sequence developed by Anne Green Gilbert that prepares the body and brain for active learning.
• Ages: 2–10 years old
• Schedule: Fall 2024 classes run in session formats with specific start and end dates between mid-September and mid-December, with listed no-class dates.
• Price: $336 for weekday classes; $364 for Saturday classes per fall session
Fall 2024 classes include Ballet Foundations for 8–10 year olds, Petite Feet Ballet/Creative Movement for 3–5 year olds and 4–6 year olds, Modern/Ballet for 6–8 year olds, Intro to Ballet/Creative Movement for 2–4 year olds with caregivers, Ballet Basics for 5–7 year olds, and Home School Ballet/Creative Movement for ages 4–9. Some classes are noted as optional drop off, some are with caregivers, and several specific class times are currently sold out or have limited spots left. Every class during the fall session will learn a Nutcracker dance that is presented at an Open House showing during the last class of the session, and there will be a full program recital towards the end of the winter/spring session in May or June. If classes are not sold out, families are welcome to join mid-session and the session fee will be prorated, and if classes are sold out, families can join a waitlist on Sawyer. New students to a specific class can arrange a free trial class by email, and installment payments for session fees can be set up through Sawyer.
Liz Vacco created the Petite Feet instructional dance videos for children and offers dance classes under the same name. She is a Los Angeles based arts educator, performer, and choreographer whose teaching is informed by her studies in theater at Yale and in education at Cal State Los Angeles, where she received multiple subject and kinesiology teaching credentials, as well as training with Anne Green Gilbert and the Creative Dance Center, through the DEL Institute, at Karma Kids Yoga, and through Baby Om. From 2015–2023, she led the dance and arts department at Gabriella Charter Schools, a public charter school organization where all students receive arts instruction on a daily basis, and she is a founding member and board member of the non-profit performance collaborative Immediate Medium.
The mission of Petite Feet reflects Liz Vacco’s belief that dance is for everyone and her focus on introducing dance to the youngest movers with the hope that movement will be a fundamental part of their childhood and lifelong experience. Petite Feet classes introduce skills and terminology in fun and creative ways while making connections between movement education and everyday learning, and instruction is grounded in foundational elements inspired by Rudolf Laban’s categorization of human movement. The approach strives to be as inclusive as possible, seeking out new stories and teaching practices so all students feel welcome, represented, and celebrated. Storytelling is a key component in teaching, and classes engage students through multiple modalities, including kinesthetic, verbal, oral, and visual experiences and development.
One parent described having Liz as their daughter’s first ballet teacher and said that Liz understands children and teaches with grace, ease, and magic, and that they will always be thankful to her for being an inspiration for their child. Another parent shared that for four years, Liz Vacco provided their son with a warm, encouraging environment with tools and a foundation that supported his entry into a pre-professional program at the School of American Ballet.
