About
Applause Children’s Theater involves children in performing in full length Broadway musicals such as Wizard of Oz, Annie, and Peter Pan. Participants also take part in set design, share costume ideas, and work on choreography as part of each production. Many shows are double cast, giving as many children as possible the chance to experience leading roles.
• Ages: 5–17 years old
Applause Children’s Theater was founded by Vikky Mullin. The program’s stated mission is to bring an opportunity to perform in Broadway musicals to youth in the community, with the belief that all kids deserve to be on stage and that every child who auditions is cast in the show. The program notes that all who audition are cast and are on stage as much as possible, and that even very shy performers are included. It also states that it involves children in other areas of production such as set design, costume ideas, and choreography, and that it aims to be a place to develop and nourish acting ability while growing skills such as time management and leadership.
Applause Children’s Theater describes itself with phrases such as “WHERE EVERYONE IS A STAR,” “EDUCATION THROUGH THE ARTS,” “WORKSHOPS AND SUMMER PROGRAMS,” and “THE MAGIC OF THEATRE.” It states that children experience a professional theater in a fun-loving environment and that A.C.T. is the place where every kid gets to be a star. The organization states that it is committed to bringing a full scale performing arts program to the children of the central coast.
Parents have shared that their children have gained confidence, discovered a love for acting and singing, and made friends through Applause Children’s Theater. One parent reports that their child feels important, has overcome shyness, and feels like part of something big at ACT. Another parent notes that their child enjoys learning techniques of acting, being both goofy and serious when needed, and wants to stay involved in ACT, and that they are thankful the program is available.
