About

Piedmont Council Scouting America – Cub Scouts includes activities such as exploring new trails, discovering creatures big and small, pitching a tent, using a compass, and cooking over an open fire. Cub Scouts take part in hikes, campouts, Family Highlander Hikes, short outings and events, crafts, games, making and eating festive treats, building sailboats to race in the rain gutter regatta, and playing in the great outdoors with friends and family. They also join special events such as Webeloree, Twilight Camp, Cub Scout Day Camp, Archery Day, Bike Fest, Pinewood Derby, an open house practice race, and a traditional egg drop, along with sports, scout skills, cooking, learning-based activities, outdoor adventures, and field trips.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Cub Scout dens meet every other week for about an hour, Cub Scout Packs meet once a month, Family Highlander Hikes take place every month of the year, Webeloree is an overnight on a Friday–Saturday for Kindergarteners–3rd Graders and Saturday–Sunday for Webelos and Arrow of Light Cubs, Twilight Camp runs for three evenings in October the week before Halloween, and Cub Scout Day Camp is in mid-June

Cub Scouts (boys and girls in grades K–5) are organized into separate dens for girls and boys made up of similarly aged and gendered kids, and dens are grade specific and led by trained adults. Anyone, including those who attend school outside Piedmont, is welcome to join any Pack. Cub Scout Packs meet once a month to showcase activities and for Cub Scouts to receive awards, and Packs participate several times a year in a community service project.

Families engage in the community through Cub Scouting by serving the community via Family Highlander Hikes activities and Scouting for Food in partnership with the Alameda County Community Food Bank. Cub Scouts also take part in Scouting for Food by distributing door hangers across Piedmont. The Tree Lot Fundraiser is Piedmont Council’s largest fundraiser of the year, and Bike Fest is hosted in partnership with the Post 911 Explorers and the Piedmont Police Department, where kids ride bikes through an adventurous obstacle course, test their speed, and make a smoothie on a bike-powered blender. The traditional egg drop at Cub Scout Day Camp has assistance from the Piedmont Fire Department, and Scouting benefits the community via thousands of service hours, including Scouting for Food, Piedmont Community Service Crew projects, and scout-led Eagle projects.

Cub Scout dens are led by trained adults, and the Piedmont Council is supported by a dedicated professional staff of four and over 150 trained volunteers responsive to the needs of youth aged 5–18. The mission of Scouting America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. The core values of the Piedmont Council Scouting America are found in the Scout Oath and the Scout Law, and Piedmont Council welcomes anyone within its extended community who is willing to try to live by the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.

For more than 100 years, the Piedmont Council has prepared Piedmont youth for life, with its inception in 1921 and a record of total Eagle Scouts, Quartermaster, and Silver Awards since that time. Programs in the council include Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing Crews, and Police Explorers, as well as coed Venturing, coed Explorers, and coed Sea Scouts, and 25% of Piedmont youth, boys and girls, participate in Scouting programs every year. The movie “Up!” and the character Russell the Eagle Scout were based on Piedmont’s Troop 4.

A parent testimonial from Nancy and Wes Steiml states that Scouts has provided their boys with opportunities to participate in challenging outdoor adventures and team building situations, practice leadership skills, and build friendships while working through a variety of engaging achievements, and that these experiences and the knowledge acquired will have a life-long impact on their development into well-rounded young men.
