About

Soil Born Farms Summer Day Camp offers hands-on farm and nature activities where campers meet the chickens, dig in the dirt, smell herbs, and taste fresh fruits and vegetables. Campers listen to stories, sing songs, make crafts, play games, explore garden, field, creek and river environments, cook up tasty food, learn how to grow food and flowers, harvest, cook with the culinary team, hike and explore Cordova Creek and the American River Parkway, and prepare their own Farmers Market Party for families and friends. Little Sprouts camp for campers ages 4–5 uses stories, songs, crafts, and games as part of the experience.

• Ages: 4–12 years old
• Schedule: Little Sprouts camp runs June 16–19 from 9–11:30am; Farm Camp sessions for Gardeners (ages 6–8) run June 23–26, July 14–17, or July 21–24, and Jr. Farmers (ages 9–12) run July 7–10 or July 28–31

The camp takes place at Soil Born Farms’ 55-acre ranch, which includes farm, garden, fields, Cordova Creek and access to the American River Parkway. Farm Camp includes themed days called Field and Garden Day, Farm to Fork Day, Creek and River Exploration, and Art and Market Day. Little Sprouts camp is part of the Roots & Wings youth education program, which focuses on experiential, hands-on learning in the natural world and in the kitchen, and also includes summer camp and job training. The Summer Day Camp Scholarship Fund provides scholarships so children can experience the farm.

Soil Born Farms lists Gina Marraccini, Kara Chin, and Nolan Kirby as part of the leadership team. The organization’s mission is to create an urban agriculture and education project that empowers youth and adults to discover and participate in a local food system that encourages healthy living, nurtures the environment and grows a sustainable community. Harvest Sacramento is described as a collaborative effort of area residents, non-profits, community groups and businesses which harvest underutilized fruit and vegetables from backyards and small orchards and donate it to local food assistance agencies.
