From Scratch Bake Sessions
Alta Vista Park Community Center, 715 Julia Avenue, Redondo Beach, CA 90277
About
From Scratch Bake Sessions gives kids the chance to practice measuring and mixing, working with yeast, cutting butter into pastry, and mixing, kneading, and shaping dough. Participants make treats like pâte à choux, ice cream, fun trendy beverages, and French pastries such as cream puffs or macarons, and spend time whipping up a variety of desserts. Sessions include learning and practicing kitchen safety, preparation, and professional kitchen etiquette, while also building math and science skills, improving overall concentration, and discovering the history behind what they are making.
• Ages: 8–15 years old
• Schedule: Camp options Monday–Thursday, plus weekly and homeschool cooking classes
Camp runs Monday through Thursday with a morning session from 9am–Noon and an afternoon session from 1pm–4pm. Weekly cooking classes take place on Fridays at 3:30pm, and South Bay Homeschool Cooking Classes are offered on Thursdays. Each session uses a hands-on approach with professional chef tips and real kitchen tools, and all ingredients, supplies, and recipes are included. Groups are small, with six campers plus one Jr. Chef camper per session, and there are two menus to choose from, Menu A and Menu B, to cook and bake sweet and savory items from scratch. The program is allergy-friendly, does not use nuts, and states that it does its best to accommodate other allergies and food restrictions, and campers sample their creations and bring home enough to share.
From Scratch Bake Sessions are led by Armena “Chef Arm” Jehanian, who graduated from Los Angeles’ New School of Cooking and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design from The University of the Arts. She previously worked as a creative director at Mattel on the Barbie and Hot Wheels brands. Her Lemon Cloud Cupcake received positive feedback from Iron Chef Michael Symon on ABC’s The Chew, and she mentored and coached a 13-year-old who was later crowned a Chopped Junior Champion. One parent described how Chef Armena created a six-session syllabus for their 13-year-old daughter Sophie, who enjoyed the classes and later became a Chopped Junior Champion, crediting Chef Armena’s teaching.
From Scratch Bakers states that it offers private and group From Scratch Bake Sessions for kids of all ages and that it believes baking is fun science, measuring improves math, kitchen skills last a lifetime, and that every kid is a “smart cookie.” The program also notes that South Bay Homeschool Cooking Classes are now enrolling for April.
