Joyful Music & Arts (JOMA) teaches a broad spectrum of instrumental and vocal music and has a staff of 5 teachers, many of whom are active artists in the Los Angeles music scene. The center uses a methodology where instructors act as player-coaches, often playing their instruments alongside students so that beginning students’ simple notes can be part of a rich musical chorus and advanced students are challenged by example. JOMA holds an annual student concert, now in its 15th edition, with solo performers and jazz and rock bands in a festival-style setting. Between 70 and 90 students attend in a regular week.

Joyful Music & Arts (JOMA) describes itself as a music center like no other and as a creative space where music can be learned and expressed in a joyful and motivating environment. Its mission is to motivate people, young and old, to discover the musician and creator in them, have fun, and express themselves with their God-given talent, and it serves a diverse, multi-cultural community.

Founder George Makinto established his first music center in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in 1987 and later opened Joyful Music & Arts on September 1, 2011 at 640 Silver Spur Road in Rolling Hills Estates, California. In 2025, Garth Marriott took over ownership of Joyful Music & Arts. Many instructors provide non-sectarian instruction for charter schools, and JOMA is a vendor for Blue Ridge, Sky Mountain, Excel, Sage Oak, and ILEAD Charter Schools. Makinto and his wife Mukarabe were involved in humanitarian work at the United Nations, and Makinto has performed children’s shows and assemblies at local schools and libraries, including “We Shall Overcome,” “The International School Bus,” and “TeRRiFiCC.”
