About

Music Rhapsody offers classes that include singing, dance, percussion, recorder, piano, sax, flute, and musical theater. The program uses a playful Orff-based curriculum and is based on the Orff Schulwerk teaching approach. Music Rhapsody also offers a Summer Music Camp in South Bay for grades K–8 and uses the Simply Music Piano method for students starting around age six through adult.

• Ages: 0–13 years old

Music Rhapsody was established in 1983. The program was developed by internationally recognized music educator Lynn Kleiner, who founded Music Rhapsody and has been teaching since 1978. Music Rhapsody offers a comprehensive and continuous schedule of music classes with options for babies through adults, as well as engaging music education for schools, weekly classes, events, summer programs, and teacher training. Music Rhapsody provides programs that offer seamless continuity from birth through all ages of adulthood and offers a scholarship fund. The program’s Orff philosophy emphasizes an “Experience First” approach where children learn to hear and make music before reading and writing it, including singing, chanting rhymes, clapping, dancing, and playing instruments, and musical concepts, vocabulary, form, harmony, expressive qualities, pitch matching, and listening skills are taught in a game-like atmosphere. Starting with Orff and then adding piano around age 6 or 7 is described by the program as jump-starting timing, listening, and musicality. The Simply Music Piano method used at Music Rhapsody temporarily delays the reading process and teaches by immersing students in great-sounding music immediately, with students from age six through adult playing arrangements and accompaniments of contemporary, classical, blues, jazz, and gospel from their first lessons. Music Rhapsody membership and professional development courses give teachers access to curriculum for eight age groups and the option to teach the Music Rhapsody curriculum at their own school or studio.

Lynn Kleiner’s instrument and DVD kits for children have received the Oppenheim Award and the Dove Award and are recommended by the National Parenting Association. Her books and CDs have won the Creative Child Award, and Creative Child Magazine awarded her “Holiday Songs and Winter Adventures” book the 2019 Book of the Year Award. Music Rhapsody products have earned acclaim from Creative Child Magazine, Dove Foundation, National Parenting Center, Oppenheim Best Toy Awards, and the iParenting Media Awards, and have endorsements from Kids First, REMO, and Alfred Publishing. Music Rhapsody also has its own line of children’s percussion instruments in partnership with REMO.

The leadership team includes founder Lynn Kleiner and additional team members Zachary Kenefick, Shuwen Zhao, Sharon Ledesma, Adrienne Henze, Harold Rodriguez, Erin Guiltner, and Hsin-Hua Wang. Lynn Kleiner is a popular presenter for the American Orff Schulwerk Association and Orff Associations in several countries, as well as national and international early childhood associations, NAfME, and the International Society of Music Educators. Zachary Kenefick has an MFA in Music Composition from California Institute of the Arts, a BA in music from CSU Long Beach, completed Music Rhapsody’s Orff Teacher Training in 2016, has worked with multiple preschools and elementary music programs in the greater LA area, and has created music activities for families at LACMA’s Andell Family Sundays. The program provides music to homeschool programs, and teachers from around the world have incorporated the Music Rhapsody curriculum into their teaching. Music Rhapsody has also worked with LACMA’s Andell Family Sundays by creating music activities for families visiting the museum.
